In 2 of the last 3 races I have burned out the 2-3 ignition coil, the last time it looked like it melted from the inside. No obvious smells or wiring problems, both races were on hot humid days, but the car never got close to overheating. In 6 years this is the first time for this problem and I am worried something may be messed up, but I have no idea where to look.

HELP!

Phew...... that was a close one!

97 has igniter in the coil, grounds ok, Alternator OK, but maybe one spark plug wire is not sitting solidly in place (#2) if it is coming loose I have read that can overheat the coil. Time to replace the wires.

We'll see if that helps, in the meantime, gotta get a spare coil again just in case.....

Speaking of spare coils... any (cheaper) options or anything better than OEM? I'm not a spec racer so rules are not an issue for my 99.

For A 1.6 the coils are cheaper at Mazdaspeed than NAPA or Autozone.
