Hi everyone,

I am new to the site and new to miata's and of course spec rules and regs. I have been in the process of trying to emerge into the spec miata world and have found some good/needed pieces to my build but want to know if they will work.

I have a chance to buy a whole autopower bolt in cage for a 90-97 miata but it only has one bar for the door bar.

So first question:

Is this a legit cage for me to use for spec?

In the Texas region do I need to door bars to pass tech?

If I were to weld the cage together will that still pass tech or since it began as a bolt in does it need to stay a bolt in?

I appreciate you guys helping me out

thanks

The cage as you describe it is not legal. If you are in Austin you have access to lots of knowledgeable Spec Miata folks. Go visit them and check out what they can do. Saving money on a cage is not a good way to get started.

Just say no.

Get a miatacage or an advanced autosports.com cage, have it welded in. You won't be sorry.

The cage is the heart and sole of the car.

A car with a good cage holds its value better than a minimal cage.

I've got a 13 year old Hard Dog bolt in cage I'll sell you for a good price... just kidding you don't want it. They talked me out of updating it and putting it in my car too. It was definitely the right decision. I got the Advanced Autosports cage and couldn't be happier. The extra money is well worth the peace of mind.

Ed also busts his a$$ like the pro he is when he's under pressure. B) Not the pressure when the cap flips off.

That's a fair price from a known quantity. Blaine Fab, who do a lot of cages in Nor Cal charge 3-5k depending on te build. Figure 800-1200 for a kit, plus finding someone you trust that also knows sports cars, preferably SM. I've done a couple of circle track cages and this Miata cage and it was far more challenging. By the time all is said and done I've only got about US$250 in materials, but about 70-80 hours in total. Much of that in design and learning the ins and outs of the little cockpit. Another plus to hooking up with a good, known quantity in your area is shortening your learning curve. This is tough enough without being frustrated with the curves of both driving and setup.
