We have something a little different designed to have a little fun for this final race: The V-12 Challenge. The V-12 Challenge is open to all SS and ITE cars, who will each need to invite one Group 7 car to join as their teammate for the race at 2:30 pm on Saturday. To participate as an SSM/SMT car, you need to partner up with one of the ITE/SS cars.

For more information, stop by the AV8SS transporter in the paddock (look for the big red tent), see Darrell Anderson SS #4, come by Timing & Scoring (2nd floor), or reply to scca@thunderhill.com.

V-12 Challenge Rules

Race scheduled for 2:30 pm Saturday, October 22
Open to SS & ITE and SMT/SSM drivers by invitation of a participating SS/ITE driver. Each SS/ITE driver invites one SMT/SSM driver & car to be his/her teammate.
  • Grid position will be determined by combining the fastest lap of the teammates from the regional race. There will be a split start with the SS/ITE cars in the first group and SMT/SSM in the second group.
  • Entries will be accepted on Friday, Oct. 21 and until 1:00 pm on Saturday, Oct. 22. Entry fee is $50 per car. Any car that is not included on a competing team will have their entry fee refunded.
  • A V12 Challenge drivers' meeting will be held on Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 am on the north patio. Any driver considering entering the V12 Challenge should attend. SMT/SSM drivers wanting to be chosen as teammates are encouraged to bring bribes of whatever sort they deem appropriate.
  • The winning team will be the team that completes the most combined laps in the shortest combined race time.
  • Winning drivers will be presented with checkered flags in the pit lane at the end of the race. Winners’ trophies will be awarded at the AV8SS Big Red Top after the race results are final. No Regional points.

We don't have the track time to try different stuff like this often so I hope that you guys will take advantage and give it a go!

So, what did you all think? Those of you who ran it, fun? It's another race for $50, hard to go wrong, right?

Would it be interesting to have additional "fun" races during the year like this? I've run some "Australian Pursuit" races before which is where they send you out in reverse order calculated such that if everyone ran their qualifying times every lap the entire field would finish simultaneously. It could be a lot of fun, especially with our fields. It doesn't usually result in major chaos because you don't start in a big pack but rather get sent out kind of like time trial style.

Start thinking about next year and what you want to see... we don't have lots of opportunities to play but we (as a board) want to continue to try new things and find what's most successful.

We stood around for a while but didn't find out where our team finished, I think Bobcat and I got 2nd. I know it was supposed to be just for fun, but I was a bit frustrated by SM cars in IT trim.

No doubt several of the cars had just come off track from the group 5 race and went right back out with no restrictors and Hankooks. :nonono:

Sorry guys! I am the A-hole that went out with no plate and sticky rubber. I was asked to do the race and didn't realize I wouldn't even have time to get out of my car between groups. All my fault. I tried to stay out of the fun but had to mix it up at the end. Sorry Dion--I tried to push you up there.
As for the format I am not sure it was that effective. I think a Australian Pursuit would be really fun. The car count would be higher. But don't listen to me...I have only done three Miata races and went out with no plate/kook's.

It's all good, Barrett. For a while I was entered, too, paired with one of the slower (slowest?) SS cars. I offered to put on a restrictor plate if I could find one, but Darrell told me not to worry about it. As it happened, one of the SS cars broke before the race so I gave up my spot so a bona fide SM car could run. Given the huge disparities in performance amongst the V8 cars I suspect the effect of some SM cars running in IT/ST trim was lost in the noise.

In speaking with various people in the paddock, I don't think any of us realized what the "V12" challenge was. Maybe work on some better naming next time. I looked at the title of the event and promptly ignored it. Going by the title, it sounded like there were going to be some cool V12 powered cars there. Apparently not. :0

I think Grillos did also...but like Tam said, not a big deal. I was just confirming what Dion said and imagine it would have been hard for you guys who just came of track to change things given they sent you right back over to grid.

Alberto...you obviously missed Brian's first post here before the weekend :D

Note to self...
Put SSM/SMT 1st in Subject line for people with ADD. :D
Have 5 and 7 earlier to change back to SM trim or just 7 before the Enduro.

Yep. Most of the time, I'm not on here daily. Work got busy and the only thing I scanned was the acceptance letter to get the schedule. :)

This was kind of a last minute idea for us as we had some spare time in the schedule and only a few cars lined up so we wanted to try something new. I agree about more notice in advance and being more organized.
