Was there ever a consensus reached on how to install an seat on sliders that meet the SCCA FIA rule (w/o a brace)? Has someone actually done it? What was the solution?

I noticed the Dave Wheeler's B-Spec car's seat looks like it is on a slider.

Mike, can you provide a capsule review of what's legal and not in this area? My car, for instance, has an aluminum seat mounted to stock sliders, with a back brace bolted to the seat. Still legal?

I would NEVER pass a car that used the stock sliders. They are not robust enough for a racing application, you "may" use sparco (or other racing application slider) style slider with back brace. I have seen some legal clever ways to make the back adjustable as well.

Mike just out of curiosity, are you saying you would never pass the car for it's annual or you would look for that and DQ the car post competition?

It seems every tech inspector for an annual looks for totaly different things differing one inspector to another. I have never had a single annual inspector even look at how the seat was mounted except to look at the seat back brace if your FIA seat is out of date. I don't have sliders anyhow but I have often thought about installing them. so... this post is just pure curiosity. Thanks in advance for the answer to this question.

The rule about the seat sliders is new this past spring. Even with the new ruling about sliders I would not use or approve stock sliders. I don't think they meet the letter of the rule. You have to spend a BUNCH of time on the FIA website reading about how they test and mount and the seats to understand. I doubt most have done this.

So your ruling is that I must replace the stock sliders. That means cobbling together some strap and angle iron to get the seat in the same location. I really wonder whether that bit of home-brew stuff will be as strong (or whatever the criterion is) as the stock (intensely factory engineered and tested) sliders were? And since it won't be adjustable, tech will never even bother looking at it.

Bottom line is that there is no solution that has been found.

The thing I don't understand is why someone hasn't designed a backbrace like this one (doesn't require drilling the seat) http://www.ogracing....SEAT-BACK-BRACE along with a quick-release adjustment (like on a bicycle seat or wheel) that can then allow foreward/backward adjustability without the need for getting out the allen wrench to adjust the back brace. I'm sure that such a quick release can be designed as to be quick, positive and strong for the application. Between a quick release and a seat slider, this would be a quick change even for an enduro. Ok, fire away....

9.3.41. SEATS
The driver’s seat shall be a one-piece bucket-type seat and shall be
securely mounted. The back of the seat shall be firmly attached to the
main roll hoop, or its cross bracing, so as to provide aft and lateral support.
Seats homologated to and mounted in accordance with FIA standard
8855-1999, or FIA.Standard.8862-2009 or higher need not have
the seat back attached to the roll structure. Seats with a back not attached
to the main roll hoop or its cross bracing may not be mounted to
the stock runners unless they are the FIA homologated seats specified in
an FIA homologated race car. The homologation labels must be visible.
Seat supports shall be of the type listed on FIA technical list No.12 or
No. 40 (lateral, bottom, etc). Passenger seat back–if a folding seat, it
shall be securely bolted or strapped in place.
Mounting structures for racing seats may attach to the floor, cage
and or center tunnel. Seat mounting points forward of the main hoop,
between the center line of the car and the driver’s side door bar and
rearward of the front edge of the seat bottom are not considered cage
attachment points in classes with limitations on the number of attachments.
A system of head rest to prevent whiplash and rebound, and also to prevent
the driver’s head from striking the underside of the main hoop shall
be installed on all vehicles. Racing seats with integral headrests satisfy
this requirement.
The head rest on non-integral seats shall have a minimum area of 36
square inches and be padded with a minimum of one inch thick padding.
It is strongly recommended that padding meet SFI spec 45.2 or FIA
Sports Car Head Rest Material. The head rest shall be capable of withstanding
a force of two-hundred (200) lbs. in a rearward direction. The
head rest support shall be such that it continues rearward or upward
from the top edge in a way that the driver’s helmet can not hook over
the pad.

Thanks for posting, Mike, but I don't see how you can declare that my setup (aluminum seat on stock sliders with bolted back brace) is illegal. Please explain.

I am missing the part that says stock sliders are illegal but Sparco's are OK

Seat supports shall be of the type listed on FIA technical list No.12 or
No. 40 (lateral, bottom, etc)
