My miata was used partly on the street so for track days i used Hawk HP plus. But now car will be track only and I was thinking of using Hawk Blue or Carbotech etc which probably has different compound than HP Plus. Do I need to use new rotors or resurface my current rotors when i switch to race pads? That is what i read but i am trying to confirm. My current rotors have some life left in them so i would prefer not to throw out when my current HP Plus pads expire.

thanks
Brendan

Generally its a good idea to at least scotch-brite the rotors with a pad change, I take a drill with an abrasive pad on it and scuff them up a bit. that should be good enough. If your going to use Blue's it may even be less important to do so, as they are abrasive to rotors and will likley knock off any old pad residue.

You should not have to replace the rotors, but they are inexpensive, if they have any notching from wear i would just pop in new ones when you do the change.

when I changed from Blues to Carbotech way back when I did nothing and they worked just fine. I have changed and scuffed the rotors and that was fine as well. I really could not tell a difference from scuffing to not scuffing. When I recently changed to Cobalt I bought new rotors to go on with the new pads. I for one just cant believe that the old brake pad material could stay on the rotors for very long, as they get worn by any pad even the most rotor friendly pad.
