I agree with you on bearings. I rarely replace a bearing. They don't go bad very often. And why replace a nice loose bearing with a new tight bearing.

I can report that I finished the rebuild of the transmission. the box went together rather easy. I was expecting difficulty when it came time to push the gears back into the box but the last piece the front bell housing went on without much of a fight. I put the assembled gears and bearing carrier on a vice on my bench, lowered the bell housing (front section) on the main shaft and front bearing for the idler shaft and it taped into place.

I was a bit concerned as the book I am using showed dismounting the front main bearing off the front of the main shaft and installing the bearing in the housing and then push the main shaft into the main bearing after it was already mounted in the bell housing. I just left the front bearing on the main shaft and pushed the bell housing over it. I was concerned that I was not going to be able to push the main shaft through far enough to set the locking clip and c clip on the main shaft but it all aligned up perfect.

I bench tested it, it shifted in all gears without hesitation. Today I installed the new motor and transmission. and it fired up and engaged all the gears.

This pretty much concludes this project for me. My suggestions. If your thinking about rebuilding your transmission, be sure you have the time. this is not a rush project but its doable. if you can rebuild a motor, do a clutch, you can do this job. you should allow your self lots of time. I had to make two part orders from MS and it was a week for each one. Also when your ordering your parts you may be ordering 20 to 30 parts. its helpful typing up the parts list and email to the salesman and talk to him about it.

You will need some special tools to do this job. a few long wheel pullers and a tube wrench for a 41mm nut. I was able to barrow this and also fabricate this stuff without much effort. Its not necessary but makes the job easy. I recommend this book for the step by step process. http://www.tower.com.../wapi/102081080 This is for the 1994-97 transmission, which works for the 1999 about 99% of the time there a just a few minor differences.

Lastly, if you get in a bind, send me a PM and will give you my phone and will do what I can to help.

Somewhere along the line, I acquired a .pdf version of a factory NB 6-speed "Repair Guide". No idea where I got it (looks like a bunch of page scans). How similar is the 6 speed to the 99+ 5 speed?

The 6 speed is TOTALLY different. Might as well be out of a Buick

If it grinds going into a gear, you have probably cracked the syncro. The best test is does it grind on both upshifts and downshifts and at any rpm and with a slow movement of the shifter. If it does, the syncro is almost assuredly cracked.

I will replace all the syncros, all the forks, all the shift rods, front and rear seals/gaskets and all the little springs and clips. And rebuild the shifter. Assuming no hard parts are damaged (gears, shafts, hubs, etc.) I charge $850 for any year 5 speed.

Thanks Dave. I have a 6 speed that is in need of a rebuild. So, in terms of difficulty of the rebuild, how does it compare to a 5 speed? So, I get that it is different, but is it harder?

6 speeds require lots of special tools. Much more difficult. I took one apart years ago and never did put it back together
