Need to install an electric winch in my 20' enclosed trailer. Any ideas as to the best way to mount it along with the batter?. And should the battery be a standard one or a deep cycle? Thanks....

We installed our winch directly to the floor with large sheet metal plates under the winch inside the trailer and under the trailer to spread the load as much as possible. We used a deep cycle battery which in the past year has only been charged once.

Thanks Greg....did you rig up some type of tie down for the battery?
You can get a plastic battery box and screw it right to the floor in a place that is out of the way.

The battery is in a plastic battery box, and so far we have not permanently affixded the box, it has been wedged between the crates that we carry our extra parts and supplies in. Right now we are actually building out the inside of the trailer, its only taken a year to get around to doing so. We will mount the battery box to one the supports for the workbench we are currently building.

Thanks for all the great information. Have had the winch for a while now, but have never installed it. I have to get some young skinny guy to drive my SM into my trailer now. The winch will make life much easier and less embarrasing. A good January project for sure!

Alternatively, you could do what I'm doing.
Rather than run a battery I have a 0-gauge cable that runs from the battery on the truck to the winch in the trailer. I used a large Anderson type battery connector. That way I don't have to worry about maintaining and charging another battery. If I want to run the winch without the truck connected (rare) I just use my jump box. I also use the truck battery through the cable to run an inverter, which allows me to run my fridge while cruising down the road on the way to the track.

Winch? I think they prefer to be called seafaring maidens.....
In the enclosed where you don't have to worry about someone stealing it, bolt to floor works great. My truck has a tow package with a 30 amp circuit on a relay in the trailer plug. No external battery required. The guys I see that use external batteries use deep cycle. The boxes are pretty cheap as they are used a lot in circle track. Now that the other car is in pieces geting ready to be shipped to China to come back as tools and appliances, I'm going to put mine on a receiver/slide mount with a twist lock on the power so I can take it off when it's in storage. It's 12k lbs capacity winch that weighs about 100# but I don't underestimate the knuckleheads in Vegas.
