I noticed in the GCRs that the windows must be down during a race. But can we remove the door glass altogether? It doesn't state that we can but I thought I had seen cars with the door bars so far into the door I didn't think there was glass in them.

Thanks

You kinda answered your own question. Yes you can gut the door, including glass, if you have 'NASCAR' door bars. By the way, that's in the GCR too.

If you review the SCCA roll cage rules starting on page GCR-102 (not within the SMCS rules) of the 2011 GCR (most likely different page for the 2012 GCR) and specificallly on page GCR-107 item D. Side Protection you'll find info about no windows. If you look at the GCR glossary it will define NASCAR bars.

Thanks Moose. David, Sorry I missed it. I do try to read the rules as throughly as possible. I didn't expect to find the answer in the glossary though. I think my problem is that I am looking at the SM specific GCRs and not looking at the complete set. I will correct that.

Thanks

No glass. Wouldn't want that in my door while racing wheel to wheel...

Advance-autosports makes some nice brackets to put your windows back in for transport/storage. Or you can use a piece of angle iron and fab something yourself.

Thanks Doug,

I didn't think you would want glass but I didn't specifically seeit in the sections I was looking in. But , I was looking in the wrong section.

Thank you

Well, with a full copy of the GCR, answers to questions became very clear. Thank you all for helping in the mean time.

Back in the olden days of 2001, we could not gut the passenger door. Only straight bars where allowed. Somebody got hit in the dorr 3 weeks in a row and shattered the glass each time. He decided that the rule said the door glass can not be removed. So he cleaned up the broken glass, put it in a baggies, wrapped it in duct tape and put the baggie in the bottom of the door.

I guess he would have been DQed for an illegal modification to the door glass.

Ahhhhhhh, The good old days !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nascar bars does not mean you can remove the glass, unless the bars intrude into the doors.

+1 on Dave's brackets at Advance-Autosports. They're very convenient for transport/storage!
