Can anyone suggest an effective method of cleaning the build up out of an intake manifold? I have twice taken intakes to the machine shop to have them hot tanked only to have them come back clean on the outside but with no difference on the inside. I tried carb cleaner on the first one, and it did remove the build-up, but seems like it would take a case of the stuff and the better part of the afternoon to completely clean the intake.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

It takes very little carb cleaner when you use a toilet brush to scrub it from the inside.

You can use your toothbrush for whatever you want but that's just nasty.

A Dremel tool works best. 
Now for a serious answer - I got some mag wheel cleaner at the auto parts store, forget what brand, but it was the kind for bare aluminum (Non clear-coat). Worked great.

I'm not sure. Its a 10 gallon metal can that has a strainer bin that we put bolts and other hardware in. I have used it a number of times. Its pretty mild stuff (as far as acid goes).

Make sure you're using the right acid. After seeing how wonderfully it cleaned steel, I soaked my diff housing in muriatic acid (otherwise known as hydrochloric). It dissolved the aluminum.
