What's the rule? I can't find anything obvious in the GCR? I searched the archives, and found reference to a specific rule in 2006, but I don't see it now.
If they are legal, what are some good alternatives that can be used instead of Mazda parts? Parts and brands?
Right now I'm looking at control arm joints and tie rod ends (yeah I messed the boots up getting the front shocks out). And what about brake rotors?
Aftermarket Parts?

Basicly, internal engine parts must be oem Mazda parts. Everything else is oem equivilant. For example, I use Brembo brake rotors and buy rear wheel bearings from NAPA.
FYI, if only the boot is damaged, leave it alone. You will never put enough miles on a ball joint/tie rod to wear it out on a race car. It will get damaged before it wears out ;-(((

For lots of internal parts like gaskets, seals, etc. you're better off with a Mazda Motorsports account and buying factory parts. You can get a bag of every seal and gasket for a motor for about $99 off ebay but compare the head gasket to OEM and you'll see it's not metal and much thicker. Many of the Mazda gaskets are metal and far more durable and reliable than aftermarket. I've bought 3 different thermostat neck o-rings, none fit and I had a leaker. You'll also find Mazda has great prices on most things. For some, when I need to replace one, I buy 4 so I'm not ordering one little part next time I'm working on things.

I also experimented with cheapo gaskets. In fact I still use the green box for storing gaskets in the trailer. The gaskets are junk. If you want to use aftermarket gaskets, I only use Felpro.

My father in law said the same thing about the ball joint boots. Just seems gross when they're leaking cheap lube.
Anyway, I think it's great if people can post some good "OEM equivalent" options they've found. The more money we all save, the more we can race!
