Thinking of removing the climate control sliders to put a gauge and my fire system puller...
Is this legal on a '97 NA?

This came up recently and the powers that be are adament that it's not.

Really?? I'm glad I'm asking before doing too much but it's a real bummer if that's the case :-(

Technicallly it is not legal. Some have done it. You could argue that if in fact your car came with air conditioning that you could remove it as part of the A/C system, but I think that is a stretch.

As Mike said, technically not legal. And saying it is part of the AC won't fly either. There is rule somewhere that says items serving a dual purpose may not be removed. Their example is an alternator bracket that also mounts the ac compressor. Since the control head also works the heater, which you can not remove, it would be a dual purpose item and thus must remain.

Also, how are you going to turn on your windshield defrosters on when it rains?

And finally, WHY? You have 4 eyeball vents and the entire radio area to mount gauges, switches, fire cables etc. Why create more work?

I'm with Dave Wheeler, but I'll go him one better ... I installed the fire system pull where the radio was and mounted the water temp gauge on top of the dash just to the right of the gauge hood so I don't need to look away from the track to eyeball it.

I managed to put everything on a radio plate and the left eye ball.
