Has anyone run the AIM Race Studio or Trackmate software on an iPad? I know both systems are PC based, but I also know folks that run windows on their Mac computers - I'm just not sure if that would work on an iPad. Rather than spend a few hundred bucks on an old computer and a new battery just for track use, I thought an iPad would be nice to have for the long battery life, small size, and then it would be useful for other things too. Any way to make it work?

The Mac runs OS10.x and the iPad & iPhone run iOS. So you cannot run a Windows or Mac application on the iPad. The app has to be designed for iOS. That said, I think it would be very wise idea for them to create an app for the iPad as it would be a great medium for that purpose.

When I talked to Mike Jaynes at AIM US a few years back about Mac support it wasn't in the cards and I doubt it will be for iOS devices either. It's a completly different code base and would require a ground up development. You can get a cheap netbook and use that or a Windows tablet. We use higher end Fujitsu convertable tablet/laptops at work for any Win based apps though the majority of our show apps are Mac or Linux based. The cheapest Lifebook is about a grand. Both Fujitsu and MSI make Win 7 based slate form factor tablets for around the price of an iPad2 but most everyone these days is using Android as a tablet OS.

Though I've used a Mac since the beginnning I've not been real keen on the iPad. Too much lock down and lock in and lack of Flash though most of my colleagues have them. My next Mac is likely to be an Air but not touring any more it's difficult to justify (though that hasn't stooped me before ;) ) I've gone from Bootcamp to mostly Parallels on my Mac Pro with thr only thing I need in Bootcamp is iRacing.

Using an iPad doesn't help without USB host capability -- you can't read the data from the car. If that was available, the iPad would be a great data tool.

Not entirely true... I think you can get an OBDII attachment for the iPad/iphone, and I know the iPad can accept wifi and blue tooth, so you can get an adaptor that will send the signal.

I also have an adapter for mine that will accept SD cards. It was the typical Macintosh tax of $39.

Does your race data system provide its data to your computer over OBD-II? If so, perhaps that might be feasible. Mine doesn't.

Pfff! LOL!!!! :rotfl: Like I have data!!! ;)

I there are a few, like RaceKeeper for instance, that sends the signal via bluetooth or wifi, and they DO have an iOS app.

I use a midget with a stopwatch bolted to the passenger footwell. Dual purpose. Ballast and data.

I use remote desktop apps to control my MBA running Windows in Boot Camp to display on the iPad. But once you get the data onto the laptop, who needs the iPad! Lol!
