Not to start WW3 about what type of oil to use, but I'm having trouble finding recommendations of what weight of synthetic race oil to use. 30? 40? Less? Any thoughts?

Well, I'm no authority on the topic but last year I used Redline 30 weight race oil. Blackstone labs test results are here:

Not completely satisfied with oil analysis results. This year, I'm going to use Schaeffer 7000 series motor oil in weight 15/40 per Dave Wheeler's from Advanced Autosports results/recommendation. See this link:

Copy/paste from link:

Dave's Tech Tip's
We use the following fluids in all of our Spec Miata's
Engine Schaeffer Race Oil Transmission Redline MTL Trans Lube Differential Redline 750W90 Gear Lube Radiator One bottle of Redline Water Wetter straight water - no antifreeze

After trying virtually every racing oil on the market, Advanced Autosports has been using Schaeffer 7000 series synthetic oil in all our Spec Miatas. Schaeffer oils have shown excellent wear characteristics and longer life than other brands we tried. Chemical analysis has shown virtually no wear in our Stewart Engines after 3 years of racing. Add proven reliability to low cost and Schaeffer oil stands out amongst the more well known and costly competition. Castrol LMA is our favorite brake fluid, ATE Super Blue and Motul works well also

Thicker oil will cause a slight loss of hp. < 1hp. Thicker oil will also keep your engine together longer. So if you have a high milage motor, i would go thick. If you want your engine to stay together longer, use thick. If you are looking for that last hp and don't mind freshening regularly, go as thin as you dare.

We have not fully completed our oil analysis on the dyno. But I will tell you that the Indianapolis Colts should stick to football. Their oil is no good.

Maybe, but they get a big check. Hopefully the oil company pays based upon the won-loss record of the team. The Colts are hurting their brand.

Funny about the Colts brand.

Anyway, I'm not sure how much time this engine has on it. I've never run it. Can't wait.

My goal for oil is protection without it being a major performance disadvantage. Sounds like 40wt is reasonable.

Thanks for the help.
