Did you try putting it in fifth first, then coming back into reverse?

I have torn apart and rebuilt two transmissions and both had problems with the reverse syncro, I do not know if its a flaw or weakness in this gear box but the R/5 gears are on the same hub and frequently (seams to me) go bad. try going back between 5th and reverse its the same hub. try rolling the car a and turning the transmission over a little to see if it slips in. otherwise, the good news is that the fifth reverse gears are the first to come off the main shaft and the easiest to fix.

Eventually you will loose 5th gear all together...ask me how I know! I would say a new tranny is forthcoming.

Pretty common in my experience. I've had the same issue on all of the Miatas I've owned. I have to pump my pedal 2-3 times and run the trans through 1-2-3 and then I'm able to slip it into Reverse. I replaced my clutch master cylinder and bled/flushed the clutch fluid. Better but problem still there. I have a new clutch slave cylinder ready to install to try and cure the problem.

Replace it now, or it will fail at the race track! Been there do that almost every weekend!

Trans has to come out. This seems to be caused by drivers putting the car into reverse while the car is rolling forward, then using the clutch to mak ethe car go backwards. This puts double the force on the rev syncro. Which has a couple of thin spots in the brass. Once the syncro is damaged there is no fixing it except to pull the trans apart.

FYI, 99 have the same problem. They use the same syncro and hub. And have just as abusive drivers.

I personally like the drivers that use the clutch as a slow speed limiter while revving the throttle........really good for the disk! :nonono: Its an ON/OFF switch yall!!!! :king:
