I wanted to follow up on a post that Drago made this week. It was in response to a question about why he chooses to race SM vs. paying to race in grand am or some other class. The answer was along the lines of sm having some of the best drivers and the best competition. Reasonable cost and so on.

I wanted to follow up on two points, where is the MX-5 at this point in the process, where are people racing them? Is it going to catch on like SM?

Cost does not seem to be a factor, Just looking at one of Mike Collins posts, he is saying that the cost to build an MX-5 is about the same as a well done SM. So where is this going to go and will it at some point replace SM?

Cost may be the same to build, but the cost to run and repair is going to be way more. Bigger tires more fragile hubs, and other parts. Sheet metal cost more. I am sure any part of the car you compare ends up costing more and will be less reliable with the newer cars.

Satire is primarily a literary genre or form, although in practice it can also be found in the graphic and performing arts. In satire, vices, follies, abuses, and shortcomings are held up to ridicule, ideally with the intent of shaming individuals, and society itself, into improvement.[1] Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon.

The 06 up cars are also in the stage that SM was in like 01.. costs are as cheap as they will ever be. If it ever grows to level of SM, the costs will rise, just like SM did. Inevitable. Some of the costs can be limited with all the experience gained in SM, but it will still be more expensive to build a top notch MX5.

And how will B-Spec fit into the picture? It it takes off, I don't see much room for the MX-5. However B-Spec has a long road ahead IMO, though others seem more smitten with it.

I think donor availability does have an impact. According to miata.net numbers, there were 215,364 NA's built, relatively few of which we would say are "too nice to become a donor" these days, 93,941 NB's, some of which are "too nice to become a donor," and 64364 NC's, most of which are "too nice to become a donor." 1999 was the only NB year that sold better than any year NA. *Definition of "too nice" varies widely. :)

Yep, I was just going to post the same thing. Back when I started looking at SM in 2k3-2k4 a top car was maybe $15k. These days that's just regionally competitive.
