I've tried even holding it with a pair of vice grips, but that isn't working and any tighter, I risk marring the shaft. Any tricks of the trade on this one? I don't have a strap wrench, which I think would help a lot.

I'm tempted to just go a few extra clicks with the impact wrench. (I'm in the middle of installing the fat cat kit).

I remember reading the Fat Cat installation guide and they suggested using an old mouse pad. I cut one inch strips, put the rubber/neoprene side on the shaft, then used vise grips to hold it. I used an impact ratchet to tighten down the shock hats.

Latex gloves tend to have some good stick.

Use a length of rubber hose (fuel line or coolant hose) with an I.D. reasonably close to the shock's pushrod O.D., slice it along its length, and use that to insulate your vise grip's jaws. You can then clamp the living he11 out of it without the fear of marring the shocks pushrod.

I used a vice grips with a rag on the shaft and an impact, that combo got it done for me.

Impact gun with short blasts.

That nut does not bottom against anything. They only squish the bushing. You should add a locking screw from the top to keep the special nut from backing off
