Has anyone noticed the differences in tire shaving between each tire distributor. They all claim to have the best technique, but they all look drastically different. Some will shaved tires will have a rounded appearance, while some will have a flatter look across the face of the tire. I also compared two different shaved tires that were both 2/32’s. One tire still had a little bit of tread all the way across and the other had pretty much no tread at all.
Is there one single preferred shaving method?

I've switched to phils tire service, best shave in my opinion.

Never had any issues with Treadzone, my tires are always shaved perfectly when I buy from them. I've tried a couple of local places in the past to have some rain tires shaved, results were not good.

Any need/difference getting a heat cycle or two into the tires before shaving them?

I have heard people swear by old rain tires shaved for drys. I took some in once that I flat spotted after trying to outguess the weather (guessed wrong) and then tried to drive full treads just as fast as shaved tires. It was cheaper to get them shaved than a new set of drys but gravel and stuff stuck in the tires is not so good for the shaving machine so I payed about an extra $60 for the shop to clean everything up to the point where they were sure they were clean enough to not bugger up their shaving machine.

You're lucky to find someone who is willing to risk their equipment to shave used tires. Most places will not do it because it only takes one rock to ruin their tool.

Phil just shaved my old rain tires, and they look great.

I brushed them down with a linoleum brush first, then took a steel brush to them to be certain I got the big stuff off, then bagged them into contractor bags. Probably took me about 30 min to an hour to do all four.

Phil can attest as to whether or not that was sufficient. No mention of any problems and again, the tires look great. They'll be practice tires for the WGI test day this week.

Regarding the 'style' of shaving - between rounding the shoulders ("following the molded tread curve") vs. not ("squaring the shoulders") I'd give the nod to squaring with some caveats.

1. You must give the squared ones an 'easy' heat cycle and let them sit for 24-36 hours before really getting on them. Easy means no sliding 9.5/10ths through corners else you'll end up with torn corner blocks. I've always done a heat & sit regardless of tire model (RA-1 or R888) and can't say I've ever had short-lived Toyos (either model).
2. Toyos always seem to require a flip on the rim regardless of corner shape but I feel you can get nearly equal life out of each outer edge with a square shoulder.

In terms of shaving used tires: yes, give the shop some cash to cover their time to clean your tires (to their satisfaction) or replacing the cutting blade afterward. Nothing better than some easily given goodwill towards the local shops who do work for us.

No idea...just what has been posted and going around the grapevine. I think a couple local drivers got to test these at Sonoma(not 100% sure) but maybe they can share?? Or if they want to remain anonymous they can PM me and I'll be happy to pass on any info. The RA1 is still designated as the Toyo rain tire! Yuk!

Those who have been on the tire will probably keep quiet for a few more days... NDA's were signed.

I was talking about it with the toyo rep at the race, and he said that it's the same compound as the RA1, just a different mold. FWIW. . . .
