Ohoh, is this "engine issue" salvageable?

So I got that engine I just opened up and here is what I found on Cylinder #1 after cleaning the piston. So I went on to clean the head in that area and sure enough, it's well marked.

I'm not too worried about the piston, I have a few spares but how about the head? Can I keep using it? What can be done?

What could have been the cause?

Broken spark plug maybe? Looks like the holes on the piston line up with the head.

You can reuse the head. if you need to deck for compression, deck the head. Just don't leave anything sharp there as it may got hot and melt the raged edges. Some of my best heads in the past have have the pistons contact them at some point. One of my bets was it in three of four cylinders. What about the engine bore? You likely have some pretty nasty scratches? That is more of a concern IMO

Only on cylinder #1, others are good.
Spark plugs were good too.
It may been done a while ago and never really diagnosed or taken care off.

Bore looks good too... Really weird :(
