Does anyone know if you can purchase keys for, and get the programming code for, an immibilizer equipped (01 and up?) Miata from Motorsports Development? No one there today knew, Mike may know but won't be back at work until next week. I have no keys and I'd rather not have to replace everything (key, ignition, immobilizer, ECU) to get the car started.

Thanks,
Alan Cross

LOL, Ironic that you would be the one answering my post. I know a dealer can do it (sell me keys, get code, reprogram) but the swap route is cheaper than the dealer total. Does the ECU have to be from the same year to be legal?

If all you are missing is the keys, you'll need two new keys, the serial off your immobilizer unit, a mazda code for said serial, and an 18 line procedure to program said keys. It's a PITA, but not particularly expensive. Other route would be getting all the components from the same salvage car from me or Drago or your favorite used parts supplier. Get a "valet" key for the ignition tumblers of the car, and zip tie the "code" key in the reader ring, presto you are killing bugs. Give me a ring next week if you don't make any progress over the weekend. 803-261-7629

One more note, BE SURE if you are using salvage parts the immobilizer and ECU are from the same car. Once fired, they are married for life.

Thanks. I've gotten this far and understand / have a description of the procedure, I just need keys and code from somewhere other than the dealer who wants $60/key and $150 for the code.

I'll let the thread know if MMD can get it.

So for $270 they will get you up and running? Or is that just for the info and key and you have to do the rest? I have all this(though I'm not sure what the immobilizer is or looks like...but the car is all there)and was curious what it was worth. I guess I need to bag or box it together before it goes different directions!

Running, cost is the same whether they sell me the code and I do it or they do it.

The "kit" (matched key, ignition switch, immobilizer box, ECU) is worth around $200 so hang on to it.

Good info. I think the dealer cost sounds like a pretty good deal if it means not having to tear apart your dash for a $70 difference!

An update for those who may be faced with the same problem in the future.

There is no back-door that I was able to find, that will allow you to get the immobilizer code from Mazda other than going to an authorized Mazda dealership. Prices may vary but figure on $250 for a new key and reprogramming. You can get the key code from them but that only helps you in getting a valet key cut.

Tracking down the original owner is a good option to explore. Some states' DMV may give you the contact info for the previous owner if you give them the VIN. Most will not. CarFax will not provide previous owner info but will provide the dealer info where the car was serviced and they may give you the previous owner's info. In my case, the dealer had closed during the great recession. Your lawyer may be able to do a records search with the VIN or title number and get info. Mine tried but came up with nothing. Lastly, search the car thoroughly for anything that could lead you to identifying info.

The quickest solution is to purchase a matched ignition "halo" (the key sensor part), immobilizer box, and ECU from a salvage vendor. Costs range from $125 -$225. Swapping it takes all of 10 minutes. If it is a street car, you will need to get a valet key cut for the original ignition so that one key will open the door and start the car. Just cable-tie the immobilizer key to the new halo and leave it tied under the dash. May be a good idea for a race car as well in case the key is lost.

The "halo" is just an antenna, not matched to the key and other parts -- you can use that piece from any car.
