This video shows the heroic efforts of NASA-SE director Jim Pantas after the crash and fire during the National Championships this year. It emphasizes the need for REAL driver training and constant vigilance.

Phew...... that was a close one!

Wow. Scary as heck. I was amazed that the Porsche driver didn't bolt from his car as soon as he was out -- I'd be afraid of the fuel tank exploding.

When one listens to the video one will hear that the belt latch was towards the drivers body.

My engine grenaded and caught my shifter boot on fire.

That has to be a first, did hot oil hit the boot or what was it that got it so hot?

Ya, the oil/fire went down the tranny.

I bought a Thermo Tec fireproof boot from Speedway Motors for $ 25 for my A Sedan. You should be able to make it work in a Miata.

jim IS really a hero in IMO.

what i see really needs to be taken from this, and i am not ragging on greg(944) is to really never allow yourself not to have the time to double check your gear before you go out on the track after you are "ready" to go. belts/hans/nets/ doors and trunk latched.

I have found only one side of my hans attached to my helmet, my trunk not fully latched on grid. things happen when you get help from others or are in a rush yourself

the belt being latched upsidedown is telling to me that the driver/crew was in a hurry, that should not happen ever if you are not in a rush to belt in the car.

that was a bad place to end up parked on a fast track.

glad everyone is OK

+1 to everything Josh said.

Why did the Porsche stop on the racing line to begin with? I know stuff happens but we really need to be certain our equipment/car is in proper working order - or stay in the paddock. I'm not picking on this guy specifically, but I've seen some real crap on track.

I don't know if I can blame the driver for not getting offline. He was as far left as he could get. There is a wall on the left and no way to get off track.

The collision happened because the e30 was offline to the left to let faster cars by on the right. He did not realize the 944 was stopped until it was too late. Just a bad spot to lose the tranny.

Sure. I could Monday morning quarterback this all day. Maybe he had no choice. But maybe he had a hint or two that something wasn't right and could have pulled off track a little earlier. Don't know, but it looks like a confluence of cluster-fooeys.

The few times I've spun and stayed on track (and not that it would have helped here), I try to drag the brake while accelerating away from the spin. The illusion of unlit brake lights might cause a delayed reaction for the trailing driver. Brake lights on a straightaway draws attention.

Speaking of crazy things that happen in a rush...a local driver found a 5 gallon can of fuel still in the trunk after a race :fuming: We call him Blaze...

With regards to the video...so glad it was only property damage in the end! The Porsche seemed to stop so quickly...like he didn't have a choice?

The BMW drove into the parked Porsche. IMO if anyone is to blame it certainly isn't the driver of the Porsche. I believe that the driver of the BMW was paying too much attention to the faster cars and wasn't looking far enough enough. Awesome to see him get out safe, and that he went to help the other driver!
