Would anybody be willing to check out a car for me in the Ridgecrest area this week? I found a SM on eBay and would like an experienced somebody to check it out for me before I place a bid. I'm in Ohio and don't want to fly all the way out there just to kick the tires. I'd definitely be willing to pay for your services.

In short you don't need to go so far to find something.
Check out the classifieds up top.
Not sure your budget but Kwebb's is for sale, in ohio, nice car.
Other's are around and some coming up for sale in the off season.
IMO, If you're new to SM use the search engine up top, read, do your home work before you buy.
A lot of info here.

My buddy and I are trying to find a ride to co-drive. We've talked to kwebb and his is a little out of our price range for a first go; we're looking for a sub $10k regional racer. We'll keep our eyes open during the off season for sure. Any other advice on what to look for?

Call Dave Wheeler 608.313.1230 ! I am willing to bet he has something around your price point, the problem with cars in your price range, many of them need updating, so be ready to spend money on whatever car you buy. The car I have is not a starter car, it is a car for someone who wants to podium, and has the driving talent to do so.

Look for rust on control arms, and cam bolts as well as body rust, look for out of date equipment ( belts, nets, etc.), look for crash damages not fixed properly, look at the cage for full 360 degree welding, and for the quality of design of that cage, Your Life Depends on all of these things. Dont be concened to much with the legality of a motor, trans etc, as when you start out even if the car is illegal in those areas it most likely will have no effect on your results.

Do a leak down test on the engine, to guage the longevity of the engine, and the cylinder head. Consider carefully how many races have been done on the suspesion, as a car that doesnt handle well will only hold you back, and last but not least try to buy a car from someone with a good reputation in the SM community, they are least likely to screw you, as their reputation is on the line.

Bro M, you may already be aware of this - the Puskar's have (had?) a 2001 SM for $12,500 located in NE Ohio. Bob Kucera is acting as broker.
