I'm assuming the F1 game has multi-player capability, true? My question is, does that mean that two players can compete on different platforms -- one on XBox, another on Playstation? I see no conceptual reason that couldn't be done, but my XBox friend tells me that he can't use any games that aren't on XBox Live (which the Playstation presumably can't use).

Wow, QUICK answer! Much thanks, but not what I wanted to hear...
Are there any games that CAN operate across platforms?

Team fortress 2 supports PC vs Mac. There's really not a lot of cross platform gaming to be had.

Two competitors will not make their platforms compatible. That's like saying you could put hoosier and Toyo stickers on your car and expect one of them to pay you if you win lol!

All true, suck. That's why I figured that the makers of F1, which runs on SEVERAL platforms and is loyal to none, might have chosen to maximize their sales. Remember that the compatibility required is not about details of each platform, it's about the location/speed/etc of a bunch of CARS, which isn't proprietary to any platform. Seems to me they would have both incentive and capability to make it work.

Actually you can do that in some cases. Read the fine print.

You'd think, but it's far messier than that. There's complicated handshaking that goes on between the peers in network play, as well as having to have lobbies and matchmaking.
It's also likely that a bunch of the network interfaces are owned by the console maker and so a game programmer may never have any shot at reaching other players outside of that proprietary network.
