I have a 99 and I am a little uncertain where I should splice in the test port. After searching Mazdaracers and the old SM forum, I want to say the ideal place for it is where the solid plastic line that has a rubber hose snugly over it goes into the regulator. Not where it goes from the regulator to the fuel rail due to slow draining? Does anyone have a pic to upload?
Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I have one of Dave W's FPR's with it in it. If you have another port on the regulator, then add a schrader valve like he did.

Here is the Miata Cage Fuel Test Port installed with the Advanced Autosports Fuel Pressure setup
Posted Image

You need to make sure that you install the Fuel Test Port on the rearmost hose or nothing will come out. Ask me how I know....

The pic above actually shows a 1.6 setup. The little gold valve on the regulator is a fuel sample port. So the miatacage part is actually a duplication.

On my regulator design we use the same type of set-up for the 99+ cars. If you are not using my regulator (shame on you!!! ) you will need to install some type of fuel port into the fuel line. The little diaframie looking thing near the shock tower is NOT a regulator. It is a pulsation damper. The factory regulator on a 99+ is in the gas tank. Remove the plastic hose that goes from the pulsation damper to the fuel line, replace it with proper fittings, clamps and rubber fuel injection hose. Then splice the port into the rubber hose.

Is mounting the regulator on top of the shock tower a good idea?

You are, of course, correct. I bought the fuel test port 2 years ago. I bought your Fuel Pressure Regulator early this year. The one time I took the car to a race mechanic to do something to the car, he noticed the box sitting in the car and decided to install it for me. For some reason, he also added another shraeder valve type fuel test port on the return line as well. I need to fix that...
