Both of my bumpers are painted black. Roof as well. I have tried various rattle can brands...some cheap...some expensive and have even applied primer made specifically for plastic. But, it seems I need to re-shoot the front bumper several times during the year, as the black flakes off and shows the original red color behind. To tow the car to a paint shop and just have the bumpers shot, is not an option because of price. I have read some great forum posts about the various uses of plasti dip. I even saw a video of a brand new BMW M3 being plasti dipped for about $300. Anyone used this stuff. I'm thinking it might be a nice solution to my bumper problem.

I use it on my wheels,, it's easy to use,, covers up almost everything, It will come off if hit,, but you can just rattle can over it again.. Give it a shot, if you don't like it peel it off!!!

I put a clear bra over the bumper. Not perfect, but it helps.

Maybe see if you can find a front bumper that was originally black.

Works well on chrome grille surrounds up here in New England during the winter (sandblasting from the car in front). Also good and grippy on the wood footbridge we've got over our creek in the yard. Dogs haven't slipped off yet this winter!

I've used plenty of Plasti-Dip but not for that. Which plastic primers have you tired? Collision shops use commercial grade adhesion promoters. You'll need to go to a commercial auto body/paint supply to get them. They're made by Dupont, 3M, PPG, the usual suspects.

Yeah, definitely works for pliers, but the auto applications are numerous. Not a bad way to paint a race car either. Don't like the color, just peel and shoot another color!

How would it hold up to things like removing tire rubber or decals? Just curious.

Yeah I pasti-dipped my winter rims on my street car. Looks great and it's pretty durable! If it starts cracking or pealing, just cut that section out around it and red-dip it. Looks great!

I would think the plasti-dip would be more durable than rattle can paint. I may do the roof in addition to the front and rear bumpers. You could spray an entire car for under $350. A car done in matte black would look pretty slick IMO, but not sure what you would need to do if a sticker needed to be removed. Might have to peel away the section and respray. Will experiment with that and post back results.

Reviving old thread. Did you ever do the plasti-dip? I'm thinking of doing a whole car in multiple colors but am also wondering about how it would hold up to rubbing, tire marks, etc.

I'm full-body diping a sh!tbox 1.6 that I'm using to run around town as a test...  If it works okay I'll probably full-body dip my new 99SM Koi Orange.

My company is now a reseller so if you wanna try it please support a fellow racer.

Paul contact Jame Namer....NASA NE TT director.  He dipped his RX-7 in White.  It looked good in pictures, but I know he recently started peeling it off.

Thanks Vick. According to Jake this is not a great options for a race car especially in a light color. Cleaning is too difficult and stickers don't hold up. Oh well.

Just as a follow up and sorry for the delay, ended up doing both bumpers with multiple coats. The front has held up really well considering everything that hits it. Just one small blemish. Am seriously considering doing a set of white wheels which are pretty beat up. The trick to a good job is to do 5 or 6 light coats vs a couple heavier ones.

Having has similar issues keeping paint on plastic tail tanks on my sprint cars, I learned that the solution to making any paint adhere to plastic is to prep the surface well and use an adhesion promoter (as Jim D. suggested above with the link). You can also add a flex agent to the paint if you're mixing and shooting through an air gun, so that the paint is less susceptible to cracking when impacted. Sounds like a lot, but really it's relatively simple stuff, and will save frustration and time down the line.
