I just noticed that I have one tire that has started to cord. About 1" x .25" on the outside of the tread (not on the shoulder). Is it time to toss the set? Or can it be rotated/flipped, safely, to get a few more sessions out of it.
How much tire cording is "too much"

It kind of depends on if you have a death wish, or if your life insurance is paid up or not.
My serious answer is, yes you could drive on it but it is not safe, you have reached beyond the duty cycle of the tire when the cords show, not to mention it has lost its grip.
You can sell it on ebay to someone who really does have a death wish.

LOL, the tire is junk...
That said I would never intentionally start out onto the track with a corded tire, but I have to say, I have driven to the podium with tires so flat spotted that 3 of the 4 were showing cords. I dont suggest this to anyone, I probably should have abandoned the race, but I am just to damn competitve to let the car shaking like it is going to come apart stop me from racing. It took two laps for me to figure out new braking points so that I wouldnt lock them up again, and I ran a different line in the corners since the longer I ran on those squares the more I lost grip, by the last lap of the race, I was very close to looping the car a couple tiimes but managed to hang on to p3.

Uh.. "any" is the answer. The distance between air and asphalt is measured in thousants when the cords show.

Only if you take a black marker and paint on some new tread.......

I won't even put the car on the trailer with cord showing, since there is a very good chance that the tire will be flat before I get it home. That would change the tie-down security.

Put a tire on the car. Many have lost thousands in crash damage trying to save hundreds on tires. Seen this happen a few times first hand, it is not pretty. Than figure what the cost of personal injury is worth? Control the things we can control as there is enough things we can't

In a pinch I'd go on cords, but when metal shows, it's time to stop.
However, it bears mentioning that my tracks have runoff instead of walls.

you do know that there are also other drivers out there counting on good common sense from others.
+1 what drago said above;
how much would it suck to have to fix MY car because someone else was "trying" to get that last session out of their gear.
I liked roadracing motorcycles because i always knew that this recipe would inlcude the "offender" hitting the pavement. being in cars can give a false sense of security.
I prefer racing with people i can trust, that is not only the guys making good decisons on the track, but also guys who actually prepare and check their cars during the weekend. I am not so much aware of these guys on a weekend, its the other "non trusted" ones I am aware of.

Fair enough. With two kids, I don't have a death wish (though some days.....).
The only thing that really prompted my question was that it was a bit of a weird place to cord a tire. Usually, its on the inside or closer to the center of the contact patch. But 'nuf said, off it goes.

You're probably driving faster than before.

You beat me to it. I think if a cord is showing on a competitors car it's your duty to rat them out to a safety steward. That's just foolish.
