Am rebuilding my tired OEM engine. It's a 1.6 and the block was sent out to the machine shop for cleaning, etc including a .008 number on the decking. I am about to send out the head for refreshing. I know there is a minimum head height that  needs to be maintained. Since the block has been decked ,008, does that present a problem with piston height or compression ratio or anything else? The rules just say you can deck the block but no numbers given. I want to make sure the refreshed head will mate up to the decked engine block without any issues. Is this a much to do about nothing question. Thanks....

Yes several possible issues.. You should be fine decking the block  .008.  On the 1.6 the pistons actually protrude out of the block, the 1.8's do not.  So you need to install and piston and cc it and put your numbers into a spreadsheet and give the person doing your head a target CC on the head to get your compression right.

Thanks Jim...does that me the machine guy needs to have the block in order to check things. I know there is a tool which can measure the piston height, but I don't have one. I presume this would not be an issue if I put the refreshed head back onto the block the head came off. The decked block is newly built with rings, pistons, etc. so it would be nice to use it.

Bill you can google away CC procedure and get the volume yourself and put the numbers in the spreadsheet, Then you can give the machinist a CC target for the head. It should be about 38 cc if memory serves me correctly
