Well I had the box taken apart and everything was a-ok except a bent shift fork, which is what Danny called out in the first place. Something to think about when doing the things we do.

 

 

Skip to the 4:00 minute mark its the 3/4 up shift when I bumped Clement Lee that Im sure did it. Nothing seemed to out of normal with that shift compared to all the other 3/4 up shifts in the video.

I think your timing on that shift was perfectly timed to put a load on the fork. Did it feel like you had to pull it out of gear?

The second weakest link in this Box is the shift forks ,they are very soft, and will wear out quickly. The first being the synco springs that Bennett has talked about in his vids. I have never bent one but have replaced them frequently.

The 3/4 up shift around 4:22ish. Just said to go to the 4 minute mark to see how it panned out and how the bumping was going. The last 3/4 up shift for the video was the culprit. Trans was locked in 4th with no other damage.

I have seen this happen to both cars

 

The car that is doing the pushing can easily avoid it - make sure you get your shift done BEFORE you make contact

The car that is going to be pushed is under slightly more pressure. You have to watch your rear view mirror closely and make sure you get your shift in before you get hit. Sometimes this means that you have to shift up a little earlier than you want to. If you wait until he starts bumping you and then you get to your shift point, you run the risk of a violent push right as you make the shift and thats what bends the forks. As I said in the other thread we see this a lot here on the rovals like Homestead and Daytona.

Aren't all bump drafts shifting issues?  That's what we tell the stewards around here...

Danny:

I've hurt a transmission pushing on a long straight where the contact can begin in 4th gear and the straight requires going to 5th (like the dowhill back straight at Mid Ohio). Unless you make that a power shift to fifth  gear, your loose bumper contact and the benefit of the draft. Ugly choice that made me wince every time I've had to do it.

Sure Rick, but the guy pushing has the ability to breathe, back off a touch, and get the shift done. The car being pushed doesn't have the ability to accelerate to make a space, he's displacing the air!!!
