I am in the market for a cage, and I am looking for photos of how the top gets mounted. I already have brackets that replaced the latches installed on the car, but I heard I may have to mount my top to the cage. Looking at Miata Cage, or Advanced Auto.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

So is there enough room to reach the lower bolts that attach the top to the windshield with a cage in there?

I guess what I am asking is how difficult is it to remove the hardtop once the cage is in the car?

There is room to mount it to the factory holes, depending on the cage it can be a tight fit.

You can not mount the top to the cage....

Actually it is legal to mount it to the upper windshield tube.

e. Convertible tops and attaching hardware shall be completely removed. Cars may compete with the Mazda factory detachable hard top in place (latches shall be replaced with positive fasteners), but it is not mandatory. When no top is used, driver shall wear arm restraints, and the cage will meet the helmet clearance rule. It is allowed to attach the hard top to the upper windshield bar of the roll cage.

Planet miata did my cage, and I have no probem getting to the bolts for the hard top using a gearwrench or normal crescent wrench.  Some of them I can get with a socket.

Hard to tell from the miatacage pictures, but both their cage and advanced are designed for spec miatas....I would assume you can get the top on and off with the cage in place.

I was looking at the pictures on Miatacage, and it looks real tight in there. Would have to swap out the torx for sure.

Slightly biased opinion.

The placement of the upper windsheild bar is determined by your cage builder. It may interfer with hardtop mounting bolts. One of those "think twice" decisions.

You are best off having the hardtop, hardtop mounts, seat and driver involved in the assembly process.

I thought the SMAC allowed the forward edge of the hardtop to be mounted to the cage???? Drago ???? Meathead ????

All of what you mentioned above will be apart of the cage install. I've already got the HT, and mounts on the car, and the seat will be installed and fitted when the cage is being put in.
