This discussion may already be somewhere but searching NASA brings up way too much and PT isnt serachable.

There is a long discussion on the NASA forums about how fully built spec miata's Class into NASA PT.  In my region its mainly done to be able to pull the restrictor plate for Enduro's and still run E3 by claiming a PTE car.

The general consensus is that a fully built spec Miata is a PTD car (albeit not a very competitive one).  But some of the spec miata rules (specifically NASA ones in some cases) i am not sure how they are handled in a SM build.

First question:

In the NASA and SCCA SM rules cars are able to "update" the rear sub-frame braces to 97.  Is this typically done to a 99-05, or is it even doable?  Is the stock 99-05 subframe and bracing basically comparable already in "performance" to a stock 97?  I have not personally worked on or built a 99 or newer car yet is why i don't know...

The other question I asked on another forum was whether or not power steering was ever Standard Equipment on the very stripped down BASE TRIM MODEL for any year grouping of miata (90-93, 94-97, 99-00, 01-02).  The result I got on that question was it was an option on 90-99 cars and standard on 00-05 cars.  If this is indeed true then you must take points for a pully change if you run power steering on a 90-97 car (not sure why you would).  But you can run any manual rack.   99 and up cars can run either manual rack full power steering or a depowered rack, does not matter, as you can use the update/backdate rule...and have no points assessment.

Keep your 99-05 subframe and bracing that comes with it.  A NB car will fit in PTE but do your homework with the points system!

A mazda miata cannot win in PTE, if there are some other makes especially the Honda civic fully developed and well driven entered in the race.  For a local NASA weekend it could do very well though.

Caveboy, Sorry I don't agree with you...  2010 Tyler Vance won the NASA National Championship in a 2001 SM sans RP.  There are going to be some neat PT Miata's at this years Championships probably using "dyno reclass" into PTE.

My idea was to create this as a reference.  I am a PT regional director and Cheif scrutineer.  I don't strictly own a Miata race car.

So the question remains is there any necessity, benefit, possibility that people use 97 subframe braces on NB cars.

Hmm how many well driven Honda civics were there John?  I have no idea wat dyno reclass means, I never broke out of my dyno number but was maxedout on points.  I was no match for the Honda on the straight and neither was Alex...

Nobody would put a 97 subframe or subframe brace on a 99 up i dont think, that rule was meant for the 1.6 guys to be able to upgrade, in PT they should be able to upgrade to the 01-05 subframe ad braces with zero points... the 1.6 guys usualy choose to run in PTF because of the RP pull for the other year cars.

That's what I thought, but some info from another party was misleading.   Technically being 1.6 cars are classed separately from 1.8 NA cars and the NB cars are classed separately from both of those... no, you cant update/backdate between them (use subrframes from one vintage to another).  If you use parts/assemblies from a 94-97 on a 90-93 you must take points.  Likewise if you use parts from a 99-05 car on an NA car...

End result is that any 90-93 cars that take advantage of the SM rule to update sub-frame braces must take chassis stiffening points...

My 2cents on the PTE nat champs...at MID-OHIO it's hard to beat a FWD car in the PTD, E, and F classes.  It's a FWD track and the extra HP they get in the rules makes it REALLY tough to compete in a RWD car of any kind.

At miller?  Might be a different story...i dont know that track...
