I ruptured a SS brake line today on the track. Not fun going into a threshold braking area.  But other than  a boatload of sand that has to be removed from the car, nothing is hurt.

So, the line needs to be replaced. Do these get replaced in pairs, or just the damaged ones? Do any vendors sell them individually, or do I need to buy a set.  If I have to buy a set, is there any reason not to just get them from MSM?

TIA.

Hi.  I do not have personal experience with this but I am sure that I have read in the past that you can change just the one that is broken.  And if you will get in touch with Dave at Advanced Autosports I believe  he will sell you the brake line individually.

P.S.  I have no connection to Advanced Autosports.  Just a happy customer.

I replaced a single line recently.  The damaged line was a Goodridge.  I found a vendor in North Carolina and they got one to me quickly.  Let me know if you want me to dig up details on the vendor.

When one line fails, is there a message within????

Do you know the lines history?

You lived well after one line busted, second line bust, maybe not so well???

From the looks of it, when the car was built (or a subsequent repair (not by me)), the line might have been put at too aggressive an angle that eventually caused a kink, which eventually failed.  So, I need to check the other side, but to me, it looks like potential poor installation.  But I have no way to tell otherwise. FWIW, I ran my personal best lap immediately right before I lost the brakes.  Hero to zero in less than 5 seconds!

That's because you couldn't slow down.  :-)

PS.  My brake line failure was due to poor installation by PO.

If in doubt, replace them all and pay attention to routing. I do sell them individually, just call me as they are not listed on the website.

Replace them all and save the old ones in case you break/cut one in the future.

Thanks for everyone's input.  Dave has a pair on their way to me.  I'm replacing both front ones.

Recently purchased a new set of Goodridge SS lines for my ‘92. I could not get the clip (p/n 43-653) onto the front mounting points on either side, the groove in the hose fitting doesn’t sit high enough above the mounting point for the clip to go in. Am I doing something wrong?

Been a while since I've done the brake lines. Does the brake line fitting round diameter fit into the chassis bracket allowing the groove in the fitting to fully expose it's self on the far side where the clip press's into the fitting groove? Measure the clip thickness and with the fitting pushed into the chassis bracket, measure the exposed width of the fitting grove exposed on the clip side of the bracket. Is the exposed width of the fitting groove larger than the material thickness of the clip? If yes, take a hammer and flat bar and gently whack on the flat bar laying against the clip. Because of the arced shape of the clip, it is a press fit under normal circumstances. The arced shape of the clip flattens out.

+1 on what Bench said. As someone who has done it only a few times, it can be tricky to get it right. The c of the clip does flatten out quite a bit , so can need a bit of force to get in. I think I used channel locks with some soap on the metal to get it to work..or tapped them. I would go back and look at it , maybe compare to the rears as a frame of reference. Also I think they can only go in one way to stay.

Good luck

WAIT, wait wait. Hold off on the force. Look very closely at the shape of the fitting that sets into the bracket. They are not symmetrical with whatever number of flat sides. There are a few flats and then the rest is rounded. Clean off the bracket with a wire brush and get a good look at the backside, then rotate the line to fit correctly. Put another way, it is probably a round AND square peg, but so is the hole. :)

BTW, assuming I am visualizing the right car, the backet is a sandwich deal made up of several layers, the cutout of the outermost one not fully defining the shape/orientation of the line fitting, making it even less obvious that the thing is keyed to fit only one way.

^^^^Steve hit the nail on the head! Very common not to notice these lines only enter correctly one way!

As I just finished replacing the front brake lines on my car, this thread helped me figure out why I could never get that clip back in.

The rounded part of the brake line goes towards the rear of the car. If you do that, the line will protrude up enough that getting the clip on is easy!

Another good place to be able to view the brake line and bracket is the driver's side rear line. It's the same config as the fronts, but much easier to see from the side of the car.
