I have just received notice from my supplier that ATE super Blue brake fluid is being discontinued due to a US DOT recall. Below I will summarize the email I just received.

If you are in love with this product, I have a limited inventory and may be able to get more for a couple days. If interested please call me. I will be removing the product from my website today.

This is everything that I know:

Effective immediately, we will be discontinuing the sale of the ATE Super Blue Racing DOT 4 (ATE long part number 03.9901-6302.2 or short number 706302) brake fluid in the United States because it has determined that the brake fluid does not comply with the applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for brake fluid. The federal standard requires motor vehicle brake fluid to be colorless or amber in color.

The purpose of this safety recall notice is to advise you of this determination, and we will immediately stop any further sales of this product. It is a violation of federal law for us to continue to sell this brake fluid after the receipt of this notice.

The specific color requirement for brake fluid in the standard is to permit easy differentiation of brake fluids from other types of motor vehicle fluids before they are placed in the vehicle. If an incompatible fluid is put into a motor vehicle system, it could lead to damage or failure of that system.

I suppose this prevents brake fluid from being put in the windshield washer tank and vice versa.  Now we can just pour brake fluid into the engine since the color is more similar to motor oil.

Maybe they could just sell the dye they use to make it blue and we can roll our own?

Dave Wheeler, ATE type 200, same spec other than amber color. Will you have this product in the future?

Type 200 is not affected. It is still available. It is the same stuff without the blue dye.

The only issue with the Super Blue is that the color is not clear or amber, and it is in a can stating DOT certified. Which it is not, because it is blue!!!! No problem with the quality of the product. It would be legal in an off road vehicle that does not have to meet DOT specs for everything.

That is a clever idea!

I've been using blue and gold alternatively in-between full brake flush.

They are the same spec. It's an easy way to know when you're done with flushing the old fluid out.

Dave? Any chance your supplier can talk ATE in selling little quantities of their die, pre-dosed for a liter....

Pop it in a brand new gold can and tada!

Perhaps ATE could just sell it as "Racing Brake Fluid, for off-road use only".  Prolly not worth their expense, though.

For years (well over a decade) Super Blue has been known to negatively affect Audi clutch hydraulics.  Only negative that I've heard about, but I'm not privy to lots of other brands.  I've been using it alternately with the Type200 for a few years in my SM with no ill-effects other than having to throw out a whole lot of fresh fluid when I'm done.
