Basically this is to fill in the gaps created by FastTrack changes...

SMAC doesn't invite me to their conference calls so I'm going to miss minor changes in SCCA rules from time-to-time.  Jim Drago does a good job keeping me in the loop on important competitive items but the other little stuff I won't have any vision of.

John first off, thank you for all you hard work you do for the class. Without folks like you we would have real problems.

I am sad to see NASA adopted the no tape in the radiator screen rule. I think it's a dumb rule. It should be open to the racer to do or not do, it's not like the cost of tape is prohibitive.

I would imagine the issue was aero and not cost.

My guess is that the thought is certain yr cars have better areo - the tape may make them even better.   MY OPINION is by it's self tape use gains are virtually nothing, but add it to a bunch of perceived advantages and a problem might then exist.  

 

The folks who make up SMAC are pretty smart dudes, which explains why the don't want me on their calls (HAHAHAHA)...  Seriously, I'm sure the decision to outlaw tape was detailed and probably had some comparative test data too.

i understand the rule, I just don't think it's necessary. Any areo advantage you could gain with Miata speed would be lost at rhe first missed apex. If your grill is recessed like in the 99, I do not see how that could have any real impact.
