Black Swan, GMG, Davidson and Factory 48 head early entrants
NAPA VALLEY, Calif. (Oct. 18, 2013) - The 2013 United States Air Force (USAF) National Auto Sport Association (NASA) 25 Hours of Thunderhill race to run Dec. 7-8 at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, Calif. is attracting top entries.

The race for top honors at Thunderhill is looking to be as competitive as ever. Black Swan Motorsports will bring their Mercedes Benz SLS AMG, GMG Motorsports has entered two Audi R8 LMS cars, Davidson Racing is in with three and Factory 48 is coming back with two Radicals.

Black Swan Racing headed by Tim Pappas will bring their Mercedes SLS AMG with an international team of drivers.  Joining Pappas, to date, will be multi-time sports car champion Jereon Bleekemolen.

Oct25_1-thumb-250x135.jpg
"Black Swan Racing has participated in endurance racing since its inception in mid-2008," Pappas said. "We have won two ALMS Drivers Championships and two Team Championships, so we are always looking for a challenge. I view the 25 Hours of Thunderhill as one of the ultimate tests in North America, particularly given the weather and variety of cars and drivers. The race is actually very similar in style to the 24 Hours of Dubai, which I have participated in twice and which the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3 has won overall. Our goal is simple - we want to win the race and contribute to what has been a dominant season for the SLS in world endurance racing. Thus far, the only two drivers confirmed are myself and my long-time friend and ALMS co-champion Jeroen Bleekemolen. Black Swan campaigned GT cars in half of the 2008 ALMS season, the full 2010 season, and 2011.  We won the 6 Hour at Laguna Seca, Salt Lake, Road America, Mid-Ohio - all in 2010.  In 2011 we won at the 12 Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans, Long Beach, Baltimore, and Road America.  During this same period, we were on the podium 13 times in 17 races. In 2012, Black Swan campaigned a Lola P2 car in two events and finished 2nd in Class at the 12 Hours of Sebring. I have also personally won at Watkins Glen (Grand Am Cup ST Class with Turner Motorsport) and at Mid-Ohio in 2012, GTC Class with JDX Racing, the team's first ALMS victory."

James Sofronas, owner GMG Motorsports, is looking to capitalize on a great season in the Pirelli World Challenge Championship and carry that momentum to the Thunderhill 25 Hour. Sofronas is currently planning to bring two of his potent Audi R8 LMS race cars to Thunderhill.

Oct25_2-thumb-250x167.jpg
"We have always looked at the 25 hour as a proving ground for our team and our cars," Sofronas said. "To run the 25 hour is like running any professional 24 hour race. Our team driver Alex Welch ran the race last year and didn't' get the result he was looking for. We talked about it and he wanted to put together a serious effort for the 2013 race. We are freshening his car, getting some support from Audi and we are going to go for the overall win.  GMG has two cars entered.  We will definitely run one. The second is to be determined."

Davidson Racing, headed by Ron Carroll, is returning to the track located north of Sacramento with a powerhouse three car entry.  Sports car ace Randy Pobst will be at the wheel of the Davidson Racing Norma.

"I am looking forward to running the Thunderhill 25 in a Davidson Racing prototype" Pobst said. "The team has been working and testing on the cars almost all year. The plan is to endure. The race is a challenge in terms of traffic. You also need to have a reliable car, keep it running. The race is a constant slalom, working the slower traffic. We are going to have the fastest or one of the fastest cars on the track. Thunderhill is a good time. We get to pass a lot of cars and that is fun for the driver. It is also a tough, because this will be the first time I am driving an open car in an endurance race. We have been lucky the last couple of years that we haven't had rain or even snow. In that part of California anything can happen with the weather. We are have worked on the car getting the wind to deflect over the driver's helmet. We are also fine tuning our driver changes. We are going to be able to do long stints, so we won't be making many pit stops, so we have to minimize that time on pit lane."

Oct25_3-thumb-250x110.jpg
Jeff Shafer and Factory 48 Motorsports is rebuilding and fine tuning their fast Radical SR3 for the 25 and teaming with Radical West to run a second car.

"Right now we have the car stripped completely apart," Shafer said. "It has not turned a wheel since the last 25 hour race. We are bringing the same spec Radical SR3 back with some minor adjustments. As we learned last year, being fast doesn't necessarily mean winning the race. There were some engine reliability problems that cost us the overall win. We will be changing the engine to a slightly more conservative spec. Other than that we will have the same drivers as last year, including John Falb, George Kurtz, Lee Alexander and myself. The goal for 2014 is to improve on our previous effort, winning our class and a third overall will be hard to beat without a win overall! Probably the biggest change is we will be partnering up with Radical West Racing and running a second Radical SR3. They bring a lot of additional resources and together we hope to be a stronger, more prepared team. It also doubles our chances of a win!"

Winding Road, Migliori's, Advanced Auto Fab and the Dutchman are ready for 25

2502-thumb-250x277.jpg
NAPA VALLEY, Calif. (Oct. 29, 2013) - The 2013 United States Air Force (USAF) National Auto Sport Association (NASA) 25 Hours of Thunderhill race continues to see the entry list filled with outstanding competitors in all classes. The December 7-8 event at Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, Calif. will be one for the record books.

Team Winding Road is bringing their Mustang Boss 302 in E0, Richard and Yvonne Migliori are bringing their Factory Five GTM ES car and Advanced Auto Fabrication is brining two E2 Class BMWs to Thunderhill in December.

Team Winding Road's Luxury/Don't Crash Racing/Team Winding Road/Boss 302 E0 Class Mustang is tested and prepped for the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. With the theme "everyone loves an underdog" the team will be documenting their 25-hour adventure in a documentary called "The Big Engine That Could." Coining themselves as a group of regular guys participating in The 25 Hours of Thunderhill, an endurance race that they have never before tried, drivers Tom Martin, Tom Martin III, Brian Zander and Tom Brown are ready for the adventure.

"We had done the Targa Newfoundland in 2012, and were discussing doing another epic type event in 2013," Tom Martin said. "My son, who is one of our drivers, immediately suggested doing the 25 Hours. Our goal is to finish, with solid runs for each driver. That said, undoubtedly we would like to stand on the podium in the E0 Class. The preparation has been ongoing. It is a long list, from buying the car in the first place, a Ford Racing Boss 302S, #14 of 50 built for Pirelli World Challenge in 2013, to modifying the car with different wheels, tires, rear suspension, front springs, diff cooler, front and rear brakes, LED headlights, cool box, radios, etc. We've also done a moderate amount of testing at Buttonwillow, Thunderhill and Sonoma. The latter includes sorting the car, but also organizing our crew to do the pit work. Finally, we are working against a long list of needed spares and tools."

Richard and Yvonne Migliori are bringing their ES Class Factory Five GTM and two sports car champions to Thunderhill. The Factory Five GTM is a street-type kit car. The Migliori's GTM is the only one in the world developed for competition road racing.

2503-thumb-250x141.jpg
"We have been campaigning this car for seven years now, winning the WERC endurance series championship in 2009 and repeating in 2013," Richard Migliori said.  "We also won the NASA SU championship in 2013.  This is a center-seat design, racing in the Super Unlimited and ES unlimited classes.  When venturing onto other series, we run in the open classes.  This will be our seventh appearance in the 25 hour race.  We have finished four of six races posting a second in class, 11th overall, and later a fourth in class and fourth overall. We actually have an 82% finish rating.  We generally qualify in the top 12 positions.  In 2013, we are prepared to stay out of trouble, run our own race, and be there at the finish!  For the 2013 25 hours of Thunderhill, we are running an exceptional group of drivers. Davy Jones, last American to win Le Mans in '96, NASCAR, GTP, Super Vee, Formula 1 and a three time Daytona 24 winner.  Considered the most decorated American road racer.  Steve Zadig, with over 15 championships in SCCA, NASA, 24 hour Daytona participant and former Penske test driver.  Paul Edwards, Winner of Grand Prix of Monaco in a vintage Formula 1 and GM Factory Driver who won the Grand-AM Rolex Series GT Championship in 2008. Paul is reunited in this race with Davy as teammates in the Daytona 24 in 2012.  Mike Holland is with us and brings several SCCA and NASA championships, winning four straight endurance races this year clinching the WERC championship in the GTM."

In the ultra-competitive E3 Class three drivers from the Netherlands will be coming over to run the 25 hours with an American team and will field the No. 36 Dutch American Racing Team (DART) Mazda Miata. The all Dutch line-up will consist of Mick Hoogwerf, David Koh and Bart Wubben.

2504-thumb-250x111.jpg
"We are bringing our Dutch American Racing Team (DART) to run the 25 Hours of Thunderhill," Hoogwerf said. "We compete with the Mazda MX5 in the Netherlands and we have heard about the 25 Hours of Thunderhill. Our driver line-up is very familiar with the Mazda and we are looking forward to the great competition over the weekend at Thunderhill. We are joining forces with the American based team Spare Parts Racing who will provide the Miata and crew for the event. The biggest difference for us will be the use of a 1.8-liter engine and it has a hardtop. We are looking forward to having a competitive weekend come December."

Hank Moore and his Advanced Auto Fabrication team is bringing two BMW 325s to Thunderhill.  Moore's cars have proven themselves in the Northwest and is ready to take on the E2 Class.

"We are taking two of the fastest pro cars in the northwest to win the E2 Class," Moore said. "We are still working on our driving list, but James Colborn, Michael Conatore, Rick Delamare and Joe White are in so far. We also may have some big names, but we are waiting on commitments. Our goal is to win E2."

"I really like the way the entry list is filling out with top drivers in great equipment," Jerry Kunzman, NASA Executive Director, said. "Every year the bar gets a little higher. I think we are going to see one of the most competitive USAF NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill in the races 10-year history. There are still some great teams that have yet to announce their plans for December - stay tuned."

The live race web broadcast can be heard online at enduranceradio.net.
The NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill will see a field of over 85 cars racing in six classes (ES, ESR, E0, E1, E2, E3) going twice around the clock plus an hour over the three-mile, 15-turn track located 90-minutes north of Sacramento.

Geri Amani, a Miata driver from Northern California has teamed up with the Taylor Lynn Foundation, an organization that raises money and dispenses it in the form of micro grants to give children the opportunity to participate in an activity or function that they would not be able to otherwise.

Some examples of qualifying micro grants, include:

Paying for sporting enrollment fees
Paying for camp
Paying for a dress for the prom
Paying for new clothes for school
Paying for a music / arts program or lessons

When a child applies for the microGRANT, he or she is required to have a "sponsor" sign for them, as well as describe a plan to "pay" back the loan. The foundation doesn't actually want the money back. Rather, we want the child to make an effort to "Take a moment to give back," offering the child a unique opportunity to extend the goodwill to others, under the direction of their sponsor.

Ideas for "Taking a moment to give back" to repay the microGRANT include:

Working for a day helping an elderly person do chores
Volunteering at school for a few afternoons
Helping out with another child at school
Doing a few extra chores around the home
Helping with a club or sporting team
Working at a local farm
Learning new skills while helping at a local business

Advanced Autosports will be supporting the Winding Road Racing Boss 302s mentioned above. This takes me back to my roots in motorsports as I raced a notchback 1980 Mustang in ITB and GT3 while supporting some pretty famous Trans-Am Mustangs. Ann Brian and myself will be there on Wednesday.

Royal Purple's Offers Big Prize to top E3 team at the NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill
November 19, 2013 11:35 AM —
20130505_160645-thumb-350x232.jpgNASA is pleased to announce that Royal Purple, the Official Motor Oil of NASA, will provide a fantastic contingency-support program at the 2013 NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill presented by the USAF
...coming up in on December 7-8 in Willows, CA. Royal Purple will award each currently-registered driver that competes in the top-finishing E3 team car displaying the required Royal Purple decals, a free custom Royal Purple-branded, Sparco driving suit valued at $2,000!

To ensure your E3 team is eligible for this award, your team's vehicle must prominently display the required Royal Purple decals on each side along with the front and rear. The award will be presented to the highest-finishing E3 team properly displaying the required Royal Purple decals. Decals will be available trackside from tech during the event.

"We offered a similar program to top finishing E3 team at the 2012 NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill with great success", said Randy Fisher, Royal Purple Marketing Director. "The 25 Hours of Thunderhill is the longest endurance event in North America and is the perfect environment for Royal Purple products to show their true superior performance capabilities. We are proud to align ourselves with the competitors at the event by providing this opportunity for them to take advantage of and hope they enjoy the added protection Royal Purple lubricants can offer them during the event".

"The winning E3 class team from last year was simply thrilled with their awarded suits", said Jeremy Croiset, NASA Director of Sponsorship. "They used Royal Purple XPR in their class winning Mazda Miata to ensure it was running at the end, so it was very fitting for them to be the team that took home the big prize from Royal Purple. Royal Purple has been a fantastic partner for the NASA competitors to benefit from and they have again knocked it out of the park offering this fantastic contingency program for the E3 class competitors at the 11th running of the NASA 25 Hours of Thunderhill".

I'd say the opposite - less feeling like they're being held up all the time and need to make every last dive bomb attempt.  Besides, ES usually thins themselves out. :)

Interesting that there's not one MX-5(cup car) on the entrants list. Isn't that usually the car to beat in E2 and even E1. :scratchchin:

The Mazda 6 Diesel is probably the E1 Favorite if it can stay together for 25 hours.
