I'm sorry that this thank-you note took so long to come out. On behalf of the Atlanta Region SCCA, we'd like to thank all the MAZDARACERS for coming out and supporting the American Road Race of Champions presented by GrassRoots Motorsports. We had a great 3 days of racing starting with a Pro-IT field of over 40 cars on Friday. Group 4, the Spec Miata's on Saturday have 45 cars and the Luck of the Draw race on Sunday had 30 entries and 25 racers.

We paid out $2500 in prizes on the Luck of the Draw race and the feedback that we received was pretty positive. The results were interesting with Danny Steyn, Cliff Brown, Voytek Burdzy and Mark Drennan finishing 1st through 4th. Mark started last (30) on the grid with Cliff(27), Danny(26) and Voytek(25) starting pretty far back too.

In the drawing for the prize money, Cliff won first prize 45% of the purse and asked that his winnings be donated to John Williams, a long time friend of Atlanta racers that if fighting stage 4 Pancreatic cancer. A class act Cliff, thanks! Other winners were Jonathan Czarny 2nd Prize 25% of the purse, Danny Stein 3rd 15%, Tyson Schwiesow 4th 10% and Robert Roland 5th 5%. Thanks to all that came out and supported this fun race.

We are already planning for next years ARRC. It will be held on October 30, 31 and November 1 & 2. Look for a true championship caliber event with some special events. I can already see a Spook Miata race in the future.

Atlanta Region is going to have a great 2014 Racing season, mark your calendars now...

Nick

Several comments were made in other threads re this weekends ARRC - thought I would collate them here for you.

  • Overall a really great weekend and solid turnout in the SM community for all three days adn all four races - Pro-IT / SM / Luck of the Draw / ECR. Others even double dipped in STL as well
  • Registration - best test day sign up / event registration / express tech in all of SCCA - you guys do it right
  • Inverted Grid - Some loved it some hated it. Personally I loved it. Now that we have done it once, I think there will be less pressure to get through the traffic so quickly
  • Luck of the draw - suggestion that you exclude any previous podium finishers from the prizes - would be nice to see some others getting the cash/attention/stand on the podium
  • Tech - great to see tech on the top cars - several would like to see some random cars also going through tech, but this is a subject for another discussion

Nick, thanks to you, Butch, Jim C and others for frequenting this forum and actually asking for input. That is what makes a region successful, soliciting input from its members. Atlanta Region SCCA is a class act. Much of your approach should be standard operating procedure in other regions too.

Danny,

Thanks for the nice words, I will be sure to pass it on to the workers especially those in Registration and Tech. I really do appreciate the summary of some of the comments, post race it is difficult sometimes to have time to go through all of the forums and get a pulse on what everyone is saying. After all we must pay Topeka.

We will see what we can do about some of the other points, they are well taken.

Thanks again for all the support the SM community have given the Atlanta Region, we want to continue to earn it.

Nick

Nick, I would never do another inverted start personally and I know of a few others in agreement with me.  The only way i would consider it is if there was a split start spilitting the grid essentially in half letting the bottom 12 start with a gap to the top 12 both starting groups inverted.  with 2-3 seconds between starting groups.

Everything else at the event was first class

I do not know what was teched in the shed, but please start teching fuel, fuel was smelled on the track as well as some could possibly be running the e85 mixed with pump gas...

Maybe that was why my eyes were buring so bad I had trouble seeing at times. I had the OPM crew trying to find an exhaust leak on my car.

Overall great event, all my people had a great time. Liked the format, though the schedule was a bit strung out unless you were running all the races available to us.

ONLY thing you need to work on is the parking. Nick, I think you were standing in the group of locals when my team and the Crowells were rather unceremoniously TOLD we HAD to move from the spots we were already occupying, set up and prepping in the paddock. Apparently everyone but us knew those (unmarked) spots were "saved" for someone of your region. Forcing 5 competitor cars (where probably two more would have fit in easily) so that a select group of three cars could park is bunk. Your parking people even went so far as to tell me my 48' rig was parked in a 60' rig parking spot, only to watch 24' trailers move in behind us. Not the way I want to start any morning, much less a 4 day event.

I feel better now :)
