Heading down to Baja for the Baja 1000 Thursday morning.  This is a truly epic race that everyone should at least attend.  A truly bucket list item!  Our very own spec miata racer Danny McKeever and STL and T4 racer Chad Gisslinger will be participating.  They are in Baja Challenge class (BC-3)  car #3.

In addition you will see all types of vehicles!  Million dollar trophy trucks to UTV's!  Also Bill Caswell in the Baja Pig a E30 based BMW.

This race is not for the feint of hart!  I would suggest anyone that is curious fo to netflicks and watch "Dust to Glory"  a great documentary of this race

.

We will be down near Coco's corner support the Johnny Campbell Motorcyle teams.

Arriba Arriba,

Here is some info on how to follow it live.,

-Photos

and Videos!

ALL LIVE RACE COVERAGE WILL BE AT: www.SCORE-International.com!

Also for the Weatherman drinking game...(for those that don't know the weatherman is like the information support at all the SCORE Races, back in the day he used to send up weather balloons to get the most coverage for his radio's anyway it is a riot to here him get pissed off)

For those of stuck at home during this 1000, you can now partake in the the Weatherman Drinking Game

Here is how it works...If Bob throws out a simple 'no status' you take a single sip. But it gets more serious from here. If he makes any reference to a 'stuck mic' you take two sips and say...'unplug it' at the top of your lungs. But now for the serious stuff...if Bob trys to speak Spanish to some kid who is making noises on the WM channel: something like, 'young kiddo, radio is no bueno, radio para la carrera,' you slam a half a beverage. But then there is the big prize...wait for it...wait for it...WHEN Bob calls someone a 'Richard Cranium' you have slam your drink, stand up and yell, 'Don't be a Dique Head.' eek.png

Very cool, Joe!  Be sure to give us a post-race report.  It sounds fascinating.

Also, have you been to the Mint 400 in Las Vegas?  That's on my bucket list.  Too bad they don't run enduro bikes anymore!

In my long and checkered career I raced the Baja 1000 and 500, the Mint 400, the Parker 400 and a bunch of lesser events.  The Mint was, by far, the roughest of the group although I rolled the truck at the High Desert race in Colorado and at the Lake Geneva stadium race.  I had filmed the Baja many times for various tire companies and became friends with Bob Seivert, who won in 1969 and 1970 when it was really an OFF ROAD race, as there were no roads, even for the pit crews.  Bob offered me the ride in his Jeep, and we eventually bought a class 8 truck together.  Good times...

Recovering from the trip.  It is as always an adventure.  We helped out at Honda Pit 7 for the motorcycles.  We were 3 miles North of Coco's corner.  16 miles by a wild dirt road from Chalapa on Mex HWY 1 or 23 miles via dirt road from Gonzaga Bay.

The crew spent all Wednesday driving down to the pit area,  Thursday getting it all organized and ready for the estimated first rider around 530AM Friday morning.  It is a ton of preparation and logistics.  Think of the 25hours of Thunderhill, but put it in Mexico and add that one lap is 886 miles, so crews need to be scattered across the course.  Honda had pits set up every 50-60 miles.  We were 347 miles into the race.

Pit area At night

We were there to pit 23 Bikes.  The main bike was the 1x of Johnny Campbell Racing.
10 seconds after many days Of prep
He's gone
Many weeks of prep and effort from the 8 crew members would go into this stop. It took all of 10 seconds and Samuels was on his way.  He was up almost 7 minutes to the 2x of KTM and another 4 minutes to the Factory kawasaki.

Our second bike came in a full 40 minutes later.  He was the 4th Bike and followed a ridiculous Local Box truck.  The race track is on public roads shared with the locals.  SCORE does a great job in educating them to stay off the course, but a few still get in the way

We pitted the remaining bikes, an amazing all but 2 made it to our pit!  We closed the pit at 2PM and headed out to watch the trucks and cars in the various places up and down the baja pennisula.

Here are some pics to give you a flavor.

Our hotel was the desert and my F250.  We parked at a hwy crossing and hid behind some cactus about 10 feet of the course after a checkpoint.  It was exciting to say the least.

THE BC3 class car did not finish.  Dan Mckeever was the driver of record, but I am not sure if he got in the car.  Mike "Junior" Johnson was leading when a hub broke.

We have a partially built Baja Bug which we are seriously debating on running in the 2014 Baja 1000.  We will either put a 1600 Miata motor in it and run class5/1600 or stick a 13B rotary and run in 5 Unlimited.  We shall see.

On a very sad note the 2X KTM bike of Kurt Casselli was leading with a 100 miles to go when he apparently hit an animal on the course,  he died from severe head trama.  He was an awesome guy and an awesome racer, he will be missed.  RIP KC

Did they confirm it was an animal on course and not a booby trap like was reported earlier?

I was supposed to be in car 1115......Class 11.  Stock VW bug.  Had some family stuff come up and couldn't make it.

My miata crew chief wound up stuck on the side of a mountain overnight while waiting for a rescue.  Had weatherman radioing to the pits for help.

They retrieved the bug, took it to walmart in Ensenada to work fix a few things, and got back out there.  Wild.

Victor, wish I would've known.  We were just goofing off after our duties in the honda pit.  Class 11 is the craziest I have ever seen.  If you come out next year let us know.  This should be on everyones racing bucket list.

It has been confirmed by KTM it was an animal, no booby trap.
