Mike Collins and Jim Drago will host a chat room "Ask the Experts"  Looking at next Tuesday or Wednesday night?  Need some feedback.  These have been successful in the past.  We may get the some help from other SM "experts" or try to do this monthly in the off season to help people get ready for next season...

For possible topics, howabout:

 

1)  "How do I tell what the car needs to go faster?"

 

Too broad?  :-)

 

I'm thinking mostly about alignment settings, ride height, etc.

 

2)  To get the most out of (Hoosier) tires, is it worth swapping them on the rims (if you have to pay for mounting and balancing)?

Both great topics and worthy of some time from a few of our experts...  

 

For question 1) Does the car need to go faster?  Are your lap times from start to finish of a session within /10th's of each other???  Where do you finish now?  What car, motor?  How much prep?

 

2) I don't swap them on the rim and it would be essentially free for me.  I do mark the tires and look for them to slip on the rim, that way I know when to rebalance..

Mike, Jim and others, Thanks!

I'd like to throw in a few questions that will help me, and I hope others

  • When reviewing data at the track, what are the top five things to look for, and what is the best way to look at "segments"?
  • Pressure gauge and Pyrometer.  Hot pressures can vary by driver, driver style, car set up, etc...Etc... But do any of the top guys use pyrometers, and if so, what are they looking for with temps (Cross, outside vs. inside, corner to corner etc.)
  • Qualifying.  What are the tricks to qualifying, particularly with sticker SM6's?  Pressure adjustments to make lap 2 the "Golden Lap" etc.?
  • What's a draft partner worth in qualifying (specific track time(s) if needed, i.e., at Road America its worth +/- .5 sec etc...)
  • Last one, and really for the rain Warrior!  What is your car set up for the rain vs. dry (no rear bar, both bars loose, toe change, etc.etc...I'd also like a pressure setting (cold and wet :)) for the H20, as many of us have yet to run them!

 

 

Thanks a lot, and if I have to pay by the question, can I just buy more parts from Drago?

I like the pyrometer question.  How often do you use one to check and modify tire pressure and alignment?

 

Also what are the biggest differences you see in data between front runners and mid/back pack drivers?

On the pyrometer and pressure:

How quickly does the tread cool?
How quickly does the pressure go down?

To the above questions...tread thickness, track temp and air temp factors?

When checking these...best in the hot pit or is paddock 1 min later fine?
