Just starting the build on a 2001 spec miata and want to install a digital dash like the one in my 1991. I've been told that it can't be done due to information transferred from the instrument cluster to the computer. I'm sure I've seen pictures of 2000+ model years with digital gauges. Any info would be appreciated.

I have an '02 and all my gauges are digital, same as in my '99. Seen several others too.

I'm starting a 2002 as well. Can the instrument cluster be removed without impacting anything else? I plan to pull a few points off of the harness for my dash, and add a few others. In the wiring diagrams it shows a "microcomputer" in the cluster. Can this be removed without impact?

Yes, the car will run normally without the gauge pod.

I knew your two cars were set up this way but I'd also heard that it was more complicated than just taking out the instrument cluster and replacing the gauges like in my 91. Mike and I were discussing it the other day and he was going to give Tom a call. As much as I hate to let my 91 go, running with you guys at the VIR Majors this year was the deciding factor to build a new car.

I dont think it is any more work than on a '99 - Alan Cross (above) will know as he did all his own work. In my case Tom is the guy to ask. And look forward to running with you this year!

Grant,
I've done both (1.6 and '01) and there is absolutely no difference. The 01 is less likely to break connector clips.

All,
I will add for public knowledge that on my '94 1.8, the alternator wouldn't run with the gauge cluster out. Not germane to this post, but hope that helps someone with a really random problem from rolling into a gas station in the middle of the night, cursing another late night of car building.
Putting the gauges in and out gave me 14.2 at the battery very repeatably...

I think the alternator issue is just a matter of wiring up a bulb to replace the charge light in the dash -- it's the current through the charge light that excites the alternator.
