New guy here!!

I have a 2001 Miata that I would like to put a spec miata exhaust on. I was looking at the borla 12667 exhaust in particular.

My question is regarding the o2 sensors. From what I understand is there are a total of 2 of them, one on the factory header and another after the cat?

From the looks of the borla exhuast, it has a bung cut out right before the resonator. I'm guessing you put the second factory o2 sensor in there?

I also would like to know if the exhaust would throw a CEL...

http://www.borla.com...art__12667.html

Any help would be appreciated. (Also if there is a better alternative to the borla i'm all ears. Just leaning towards the borla since its supposed to be a little quieter and have better fitment than the SD.) I also looked at the MBS spec miata exhaust as well.

Thanks!!!

You use one, grd the other. Use the other bung for Fuel/air ratio/data if you want. (correct me guys if I'm wrong here)

A lot use Springfield dyno exhaust.

Also a lot of info here about it. Use the search feature upper right.

Good luck

If u have an o2 on the header you will need to get rid of that ca emissions mainfold and put on a fed manifold Drago has posted some pics in the past of how to dummy the 2nd o2 and maybe he could post some pics of how he runs the ca emissions.

Stick with the Springfield exhauas 99% up front are running that exhaust for a reason and it isnt for its sound.

On Springfield exhaust u will need to weld in a second bung for you a/f gauge...

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up. I just took a look at the car right now and the first o2 sensor is directly AFTER the manifold. So i'm good as far as the Fed emissions go. So the first sensor just plugs right into the new exhaust.

I'll try to find the post about what to do with the second o2 sensor.

U stick second 02 under the rear deck lid and then ad your a/f by welding in another bung.

I dont know anything about the Borla but the MBS is quiet and actually sounds decent UNLIKE most all SM exhaust. It is down on power On my 2002 SM by about 1/2 HP and 1/2 TQ  small enough that it doesn't matter if noise matters to you. It has the correct bungs.

How is the fitment and quality on the MBS? I'd be willing to sacrifice the power for a little less noise and ease of install.

The fitment is excellent. I have installed it on about 6 cars so far and they all fit perfect. The springfield dyno exhaust is a PIA on every car I have touched.

We have installed two Borla systems.  While Pricey, the fitment is excellent especially compared to the SD exhausts which can be hit or miss.  Don't bother with the rear section they sell unless you need to run the car at an unmuffled day like at Laguna or Lime Rock.  It is a solid 4-5 hp drop over the front section being run by itself.

Perfect as already said by someone else. I think it also keeps the heat down in the car as the muffler is in the back. I agree with the SD being a PIA, it does make the best power of the exhausts I have tried though. I switch back and forth as needed.

My Borla results are the same.

Alan, is that the Borla is the same HP / TQ as the SD or they are 1/2 down relative to the SD?

Does anyone either the MBS or the Borla pass 90 db at Laguna?

FYI, Barry H said a while ago that SD uses Magnaflow 10436 and if you put a flang on the end, add Magnaflow 11226 for Laguna.

Interesting... could get a quick exhaust couple for the single weekend....

Cheaper than Borla / MBS but at what HP / TQ cost?

About 1/2 down peak HP, about 1/2 up peak TQ as compared to SD YMMV. Like Novak, I have both.

Borla would certainly pass if you purchased the additional rear silencer option.

So to make sure I am not missing any thing here....

Using the borla and MBS  take 1/2 on peak HP and TQ.   Adding the borla silencer would have it pass 90 db but would rob even more HP and TQ and more $$ out of my wallet.

Would the MBS pass 90 db?  If so that seems to be the ticket since is a cheaper, not having to buy 2 pieces and only take 1/2 HP and TQ.

BTW, what does YMMV mean?

Sorry,

Borla, on my car, made on average 1/2 less peak HP and 1/2 more peak Tq compared to the SD.

Borla says their additional muffler will get it to 90 db I think (can't find the reference at the moment).

I know nothing about the efffect of the additional Borla muffler on performance.

I had not even heard of a MBS exhaust until this thread.

on the borla web site they have a video, on the left when looking at the second/muffler part, done at Laguna, showing db as the car goes by.

I had never heard of MBS either.  I know the guys who tested the Borla out here in CA and got good feedback on HP/TQ.  On a 1.6 which I had, it was as good or better than the SD, fitment was excellent, but HP/TQ were car dependent.  But now i have 1.8 and a new set of issues.
