The Charlotte Observer (thatsracin.com) published another piece regarding race safety.

http://www.thatsraci...all-tracks.html

A bit about fatalities in the SCCA as well as highlighting Metzger's passing and what can be learned from the tragedy.

The death illustrates the safety challenges facing smaller tracks and racing bodies such as the SCCA, which has seen fatalities at its events increase in the past 10 years. From 1991 to 2001, 12 people were killed at SCCA events. In the past 10 years, 16 people have died, including two spectators.

And quite a bit about head and neck restraints. A good read.

And again I am going to ask, of those that died at SCCA events how many were medical issues? Shouldn't we have to carry massive insurance to watch TV since many more folks die watching TV then at road races? What about sleeping... how many folks die in their sleep? Should be a massive insurance policy their too. There really needs to be some perspective... but that doesn't sell newspapers.

Nothing wrong with a gentle reminder that while we're all out there having fun playing race car driver, to play a bit safe and remember bad things can happen. They do sometimes. People sometimes have a stroke sitting on the shitter but that doesn't mean you should be afraid of the shitter or shouldn't be a bit careful when you're conciously doing things a bit dangerous.

I've been known to release some danger when on the crapper.

Lance what is your point? Did you even read the article? Racing is dangerous. It's a hobby that can kill. We need to mitigate the dangers. How many died because of what you call a "medical condition"? Last I heard a basilal skull fracture is a medical condition. The SCCA delayed head and neck restraints to give the racers "more time". More time for what, to buy more tires? I don't like the restrictions of the HANS but knowing that it could save my life I'm willing to make the trade off.

I understand what Lance is saying, since I started hanging out at the track and racing for a couple decades, the only fatalities I've seen were the result of a heart attack.

Not taking anything away from the seriousness of this topic, but we all deal with the chance of serious injury or death topic a little differently. Personally I worry about my cholesterol, weight and blood pressure more than I think about getting hurt at the track.

And to that end I exercise regularly, eat oat bran and use a Hans under my Schroth Profi II belts when I'm spanking my monkey :D

I have an opinion so I must be right

That's fine wear your hans if you think you need it but if i don't want to wear one i shouldn't be forced to.

I would support exempting you from wearing belts and a helmet too. :P

I think getting to and from the track is probably more dangerous. Wonder what the stats are on that?

If you have that kind of power over time and space then you should be able to afford a HANS.
