I have a 94 Miata that has the two piece rear axles.  Is there any advantage in weight (or anything else) to replacing these with the later 1 piece rear axles?  It would be nice to have 8 fewer nuts and bolts to check.

Most people use the 1 piece axles because they are available rebuilt from the after market. I use them in my car because run in the ITA class and we can run different gear ratios. It is easier to change the diff with the 2 piece axle.

The 2 piece axles are hard to find and are not available from the after market.

If you decide to switch to the 1 piece I would be interested in buying your 2 piece axles.

I've often wondered this myself in terms of legality.

But, highly reputable vendors on this site sell the 1 pc axles for the 1.6 cars, so why not for 1.8 early cars?

FWIW, they are 1.2 lbs lighter than 2pc axles.  But that rotating weight is really centered, not like a light flywheel or something...

My decision came from fitting the exhaust, actually.  SD exhaust, it's a PITA with 2 pc axles.  They beat on it like crazy right by the diff....

And, I think it's safe to assume that random 1 pc axles (from 95.5 and up) have fewer miles than random 2pc axles (from 93 and up).  This is born out by the race discoloration I see when I rebuild them...
