OK, sorry, couldn't find anything about this searching the forum and doesn't look like the rule book is talking about it either.

2 questions:

Q1. Is it legal to do an EGR delete to run in SM?

Q2. If yes to Q1, any side effects of doing it?

My goal is to get a cleaner engine bay...

If the GCR doesn't say you can(you couldn't find correct?)... You can't!

The way I read it, emissions may be removed and EGR is part of the emissions system.

The rules do not say that.  There is a stipulation for the exhaust pipe is all.

Not trying to put words in your mouth James but your position seems to imply that removing the EGR tube & capping the port, the manifold has been "modified"?

Whereas the GCR notes 'emissions equipment' can be removed (presuming they're noting primarily the charcoal cannisters & other tubing) and I would suspect an EGR component would be directly related to the emissions control system.

Brandon,

No words in mouth taken.  I only mean I don't see any provisions in the SMCS section of the GCR that explicitly says emmissions equipment can be removed.  It does say you can remove the exhaust after the down pipe and replace it as long as it meets x, y and z.

If the GCR says emission equipment can be removed, than I stand corrected.

But I have seen the EGR valve and pipe on every SM I have ever seen.  Perhaps Dave or Jim will offer their opinion.

Hit the 't00bz and searched the GCR PDF....

James you are correct.  It was the ITCS I was thinking of that notes EGR/exhaust emissions equipment removal.

For SM, there is no provision for removal of any of the emissions stuff outside of the catalytic converter.

Answer is: you cannot remove any portion of the EGR emissions system for a legal SM car.

I believe I had memory bleed over from the IT rules as well. That said, the EGR functions only under a narrow operating window, such as highway cruising, to lower catalytic converter temperatures. At WOT it does not function, so on the track even if the car had a catalytic converter, it is not in use. Without the converter it's not needed. On a Spec Miata it serves no purpose and no performance advantage is gained or lost with retaining it. Retaining emissions controls on a race car, especially when the primary control, the Cat. converter, is allowed to be removed is ridiculous. The SM rules should be updated to allow removal of these now useless emissions items.  We need to worry about enforcing the areas that actually provide a performance advantage or that are safety concerns, not piddly stuff.

There is lots of stuff like that we are not permitted to remove.  Just the way it is.

You can always submit a request for rule change.

I imagine the response to such a request would be "Thank you for your request; however, it is not consistent with class philosophy." There's no problem here to solve, so I think we should leave it alone.

Actually the response more likely will be, "Thank you fo your input".

There is no issue for those that want to clean up their engine bay or do whatever they want with their race car, choose an approate class and go nuts.
