I have a 99, Fed edition, with the second O2 sensor in the trunk(it is grounded).  The OBD2 reader throws P1141 PowerTrain code, which when looked up indicates the 2nd O2 sensor has a problem.  That of course could be the sensor, the wiring or the ECU (or what ever the acronym Mazda now uses).

Bottomline is do i care?  I know the O2 sensors on NA are largely run open loop on track and doesn't matter.  However I want to ensure an NB is the same and that this code is not affecting my HP and TQ buy messing with timing or fuel mixture.

Thoughts...

It will not effect HP or TQ. But be sure to scan the ecu daily or you risk another problem that you ignore "because that light is always on"

I find with the light removed it doesn't bother me anymore. :)
RazerX, the 2nd O2 sensor does nothing but monitor the health of the Cat, which I certain you no longer have.

So sounds like no reason to plunk down $100 just check daily per Jim's advice.

I took the bulb out of my '97 dash. OBD-II requires an O2 sensor downstream from the cat to monitor its performance.

It throws a light so you fail smog if the cat doesn't work as expected.

The ECU does absolutely nothing with the data from that sensor, so no big deal.

But Jim has a good point and it reminds me that I should check regularly for other codes that could indicate other issues (missifire, etc,...). Haven't looked in a looong time.
