Has anyone experienced or found a drilled hole in the top front right corner of their oil pump that goes directly into the oil pan?   This would be located just to the right of the plastic timing marks.   The hole is not threaded, approx. 3/8 inch in diameter.

When inspecting my old pump, I find a small indentation in the old aluminum casting.

Not large enough for a dip stick.

What new great feature have I found, that will be a pain if I have to remove this oil pump.

Thanks

That is always there. It is the dipstick hole for a fwd Mazda using the same engine. Plug needs too be purchased from Mazda seperate or removed from your old pump

What is this plug made of?  Rubber?  Metal that needs to be pressed in?

Both of the old OE pumps that I pulled off my motors have a metal plug in that hole that looks like it was pressed in.

Thanks.

The plugs are made of metal. You just need to tap the plugs in. There is no need to use a press or anything.

I'm curious...  Can't one just stuff the hole with JB Weld or some sort of epoxy?

That $2 plug is going to cost me 10x that in shipping.

I would imagine that JB Weld would work. I've never tried it, but there isnt any pressure to speak of in that part of the pump. I normally order a couple of them when I'm placing an order for other things that I need.

I have a hard time imagining a time when there isn't SOMETHING else I need from MazdaMotorsports.. replace a spare, something. :)

Grey silicone has been used in a pinch. Better would be too just knock the old plug out of your old pump and tap it in. As honey badger said there is no pressure there just slosh

When i was in a pinch, i tapped it out cut the head off the bolt, and hack-sawed a groove in it for a screwdriver and then put sealant on it. Walla shade tree mechanic fix.

Just tapped it out.  Screwdriver and a light hit with a hammer is all it took.  Thought it was going to be more difficult.

This a 99 thing? Or are 1.6's the same?

I'm just getting to order my new pump, and want to get it all

All the same. Order the plug when you order the pump
