Stearns mechanical, Ferrara got smashed into, burdzy mechanical, sandlin was on the winery tour...

This has been a very costly weekend for many and its not over...

There are more written off cars then I can remember.

Had a great race yesterday in sm with leverone, tom brown, and some others... that was some of the cleanest racing in have ever seen for 20th. Leverone and I are both looking forward to it again today, we really never seen each other on the track till yesterday and it was a ton of fun.

Had a lot of fun in SM yesterday...great clean racing all around. I had to dig deep to catch the lead pack, but too little to late. Congrats to Bolanos, Dillon, and Andrew. Drago is a hack...P4 pfffft! ;)

Today, not so much fun, but thankfully only cars got hurt this morning (we will be tubbing the 01). Lots of impatience on the STL start and a huge mess taking the green. STL race yesterday was a mess too. Lots of stupidity in the form of bad decisions, no other way to put it.

Enjoyed working with Mike Ferrera and Phil Safriet on the test day - they made some huge progress and were able to apply some new techniques all weekend with success. Ted Cahall also set personal best laps, and thanks to him for letting me loose for the SM race yesterday in his 01.

It was interesting to run the 01 in SM, after the shakedown at Sebring in STL. Seemed like it was competitive but lost just a hair on top end. Nothing new there, but it was good to experience it firsthand and compare against the fast 99's.

I will post some video of cars rolling and stuff getting crushed, tomorrow.

Congrats to the podium finishers,  Drago, Machavern & Bolanos!  Looks like the top 3 broke away from the pack today.

Even bigger congrats to all those who got to take their cars home in one piece.  Two of my builds were totaled this weekend :(

Thanks for the write up jim.  As JR said Joey G is "ok".  banged up but ok.

I took a quick look at race monitor....looks like 19 cars or so didn't take the green for the SM race today.  That's what, a third of the field?  Wild.

Congrats to Jim Drago and the entire East Street Band! Three East Street cars in in the top 10 with 2X standing on Sundays top podium step.

The BIG Spec Miata story this year though continues to be Alex Bolanos ... Saturdays winner, three Majors wins out of six races so far this year along with two 2nds and a 3rd.  A 100% podium record, this young gun has been flawless ... Big Kudos to Alex !

and to Jeffy Labounty and Cory Collum at AutoTechnik. These  two build all their cars in house, all the front runners have known them for years (von Charbs - former Natl Champ), now the entire country can take notice. Great going guys, two thumbs up ...

can someone explain why all the carnage at this track. I was there twice last year and both times took home a bent race car due to no fault of my own. I did not make it this weekend but not to sad as the car has all new tin.

Its frustrating to be battling mid pack and someone take you out for 15th place or someone trying to win the event on the start.

I get tired of fixing the car.

Congrats to Drago Today and the rest of the podium finishers, there was some pretty fast tough competitors there this weekend. Times were tight.

Alex has been on fire, pretty impressive.

Just to be clear........  There were LOTS of wrecks in all classes. SM had ZERO full course yellows and I dont think either race had anything decided by the local yellow placements. STL took out alot of the SM cars.

Congrats to Drago - maybe he isn't a hack after all! :)

Here's the incident that caused all the carnage in race 1. I saw this coming (slowing Porsche pulling off at the exit of 5) heading down the esses and lifted at the exit of 5 to stay left...glad I did. Shortly after this Amy and Joey came through and Amy collected the Z car after it rolled.

http://youtu.be/ntCrh-DRXsE

Here's the incident that caused all the carnage in race 2. Danny has a much clearer view of who did what, but the polesitter Anderson was checking up the field and the RX7 got impatient and went between Yiannis and Anderson. Yiannis didn't see him and a squeeze ensued. I thought I was going to be ok but the last hit was a piledriver into Yiannis.

Both terrible incidents Todd.  On the rollover was there a yellow flag anywhere?  Didn't see one on the video but hard to tell.

That was a very hard hit in the Miata.  Terrible luck having a car turned sideways before the flag stand.  Hope the neck and shoulders are feeling OK.  You put the Hans to the test unfortunately.  Tough break for the cars too.

There was no yellow for the T5 deal at the time because the Porsche was rolling up the hill (you can see him rolling down to T5 as we head down the esses, which is why I checked up) and he had the momentum to pull off the track in a safe place. Instead he hit the brakes and parked at the end of the exit curb for T5. I can't think of a less safe place to stop on the track. Poor decision.

I am fine - I was the meat in the sandwich so while the car took a big hit front/rear it was a very mild impact for me in the car. Having seen Amy/Joey footage I'm very glad they are mostly ok - those were some BIG hits.

Congrats Jim, Dillon, Alex, sounded like quite the race.  Great win Jim!

Damn Todd you sure had a front row seat for some bent up cars.  Sorry to see your car get banged up.  Glad you are ok.

The guy who pulled off track right at the turn 5 track out was just plain dumb.  If he had tucked his car off track left or up the cutoff road track right that incident never happens.

I have heard that the corner workers motioned him to stop there ( the Porsche) No idea if this was true. But this is an instance if it were true to blatantly disregard the corner worker and use your best judgement and get to a safe spot.  Parking there was never an if, but definitely a when type of scenario.   Very glad to see everyone is mostly OK.  I must say, for the first time in a very long time, I was a little uneasy getting in the car Saturday and Sunday. I pulled my belts tighter than I have in the last few years. I really dont like seeing cars and the what could happen, but it is definitely there. I will write something up later.

The Z car driver told me that he talked to the Porsche driver and asked him why he stopped there, and he said the guy eventually admitted it was a bad idea....lesson learned the hard way?

wow. how did that start get so messed up?  Todd how many times did you get ping ponged front to rear before the flag?  I'm guilty of getting close to the guy infront of me sometimes but that was wild.

Jim

I was right behind the Porsche when he lost drive. We were coming up on the T4 Neon that was running off the pace and we caught him right in Turn 5. We both had to slow down quite a bit to get around the Neon safely I went left the Porchse went right and I guess when he pushed the gas pedal to accelerate by the Neon nothing happened. At that point I guess the Porchse didnt have enough momentum to coast down the straight and had pull to off on the right. At least that was what I saw I cant really say if it was the right thing or not because it was hard to tell what his other options were and at exactly what point he realized he lost his transmission....obviously he could have just dumped it in the gravel trap or he could have tried to slow down enough to make the club circuit but its all very circumstancial as we all know. Im not trying to say that this was or was not the Porsche drivers fault, just what I saw. One thing I thought was ridiculous was I saw the car flip in my rearveiw mirror and it wasnt until turn 3 the next lap that the double yellow came out!

Don't drive like my brother!
