This was the first race of the year for us Northerners. We had a 22 car field of competitive drivers for the season opener.
Big congrats to Justin Hillie aka "the Zombi" for his dominating performance. He won both days, Saturday starting DFL to win.
Friday practice brought rain for half the day but it did dry up enough so we could get the set up close.
On Saturday Hillie blew up his transmission in warm up so he missed qualifying, starting last. The weekend was warm and dry mid 70's both days. It was wonderful weather.
The grid for Saturday was Murdick, Todaro Williams Davis and Novak. There was an unfortunate wreck on the start taking out Chris Price and damaging Guthrie and others, meanwhile Hillie gets 7 or 8 spots by turn one. Murdick and Todaro are on the radio together saying look at Hillie coming. Like a Zombie he just keeps coming.
Todaro and Mirdick swap the lead, then Hillie joins the group overtaking Todaro to win.
Williams Davis and Novak are having an intense battle for the last podium spot which ends up going to Novak at the end.
Results: Hillie, Murdick Novak
Sunday was not as zombieish. Hillie on the pole with a blistering qualifier, Todaro, Davis and Williams Novak in pursuit. Hillie was never challenged leaving Williams, Todaro, Davis and Novak fighting for the remaining podium spots. Williams made a bold move to the inside of Todaro on the end of the back straight, with a car on the outside of Todaro making it 3 wide. Williams gaped from there. Todaro Davis and Novak battled for the last podium spot with Novak making several attempts and some fun clean door to door racing with Todaro.
Results Hillie, Williams, Todaro.
For me, this was a fantastic start to the year. I went to the track with a new EastStreet race car, that needed to be sorted. I did chase the set up most of the weekend but it performed well. 2 P2 qualifiers and a P3 finish, with my first drive. I need to thank Jim Drago for building me a rocket, this car was good out of the box.
As Justin said on Facebook this was a blast for those who have not raced with us, after the day Saturday, we get out the projector, put up everyone's race videos, drink beer, eat, have a fire, and bust horns on what we see in the video.
Can you describe a better way to spend the weekend?
Some guys with new cars are going to be vary fast and difficult to deal with this year. Johnath Davis is fast and getting faster every race. Jay North has a fast car and is faster every race. There will be some new names on the leader board this year in my view.
