I had some play in my front wheel when checking it (side to side at the 12:00 and 6:00 position)...I tried two older hubs with repacked bearings and one new hub.....they all had play after replacing, retorquing and putting on the wheel.........I will replace the upright/spindle tomorrow......
has anyone had a spindle go bad?......anything alse I should check?
thanks all
On my clock 12 and 6 are top and bottom not side to side.
Play side to side (3-9) with no play top/bottom is usually in the tie rod somewhere. Inner, outer or Jam nut as Jim said.
You can have ball joint play also, although rarer. On the left front, when holding the tire at 3 and 9, you will feel ball joint movement in your right hand. The tie rod assembly acts as the pivot point and the ball joint becomes the "slop". Hard to describe in words, but once you feel the difference it is obvious.
Check the upper ball joints for moving up, out of the control arm. We put a small tack weld to insure they can not become raised. Lower ball joints have broken with excessive use of large curbs.
