Wow, I would not have put a lot of money on this happening. MS released from the hospital. Truly amazing after all this time. No indication of what state he is in though other than 'out of coma'.

I saw that. Kent Carter posted this on facebook..
The article conflates induced coma with sustained coma, however. They are different things and mean different things. When we put a patient with TBI into a 'medically induced coma', we are using strong drugs like barbituates and often hypothermia to suppress brain activity. In doing so, we hope to limit metabolic stress and swelling and to preserve function for the future once the initial insult has healed.
When we turn off the drugs, we wait a few days for the medications to clear and assess what we have. If the person remains in a coma, this is no longer due to the drugs but the injury to the brain. This is where Schumacher is. Or was.
The fact that he has wakened is hopeful, but the long delay is concerning. The man may not be the same man as before that fateful day on the snow. What happens next will be maddeningly slow for all involved. He may have some of his faculties or not. He may regain what he lost... or not. Don't expect much more in the way of updates for a long time.
We have no idea if he left the hospital wiith any faculties whatsoever, idont think we will know anymore than what we have over the last few months. While I respect the families privacy during a very difficult time, I have to say I think they have done a terrible job handling this situation. The man lived his life as a VERY famous driver with millions of fans. I think a happy medium could have been acheived that respected the the familiies right to privacy and say monthly updates for his fans. Who knows, I can't even imagine what they are going through.
