[HLF]

I just finished my first track day with my miata running 195/50-15 Dunlop ZIIs. They are still in good shape with no flat spots of chunks larger than a pea (also after 12 AutoX runs). 

 

I am going to start HPDE continue my DE with NASA with the same tire but I also added up the points for TT and I saw ZIIs are the same points as R1Rs, but the R1R have a lower wear rating making me think they are more "sticky".

 

Has anyone switched between the two? Any thoughts?

Not familiar with him.  Just curious.  I have no information to offer about the Dunlops either.  Sorry for the thread hi-jack.

I have read that a tire's wear rating, is only relevant to other tires in that manufactures line of tires, meaning one brand with a number of 100 could be different than another brands tire rated the same. It's a subjective standard.

You just have to test both and see what works for you, unless too find someone who has

I've ran the Dunlop ZII's for both track use and autocross and I loved them. I know people who have used both and the general consensus is the ZII is better for the track since it handles heat well and stays consistent throughout a session and the wear is great. The Toyo R1R is a little quicker for autocross but it wont handle the heat from the longer track sessions as well and will wear faster.

 

And just a tip, try mounting your camera on your harness bar between the drivers and passengers seat, it will give you a better perspective of where you are on track as well as what your hands are doing and your gauges.

I don't care about the shifting or driving, I do care about:

No drivers suit

No HANS

No seat back brace

No roll cage

 

After all your posts about minutia, you completely missed the basic safety items. Make the car safe, then reliable, then fast.

 

Sorry to be harsh, but your wife wants you back in one piece.

While a full cage may not be required at this time, at the very least you should make sure the seat is well secured with a back brace and I would also add a HANS devise given that you are using a harness system. If you're just doing HPDE's, at the very minimum wear long sleeves. Not sure why short sleeves and even shorts are deemed appropriate for any type of track driving.

 

I love the ZII's on my 99 which I use as an instructor with NASA...according to Tirerack they are one of the top 2 or 3 extreme dry performance tires, though I understand Dunlop is replacing the ZII's with something which may even be better. Never felt the R1R's were up there with the ZII's, Rivals or RE11's

Point taken guys. I was surprised to see the seat moving as much as it did. I just added a bar that goes between the seat belt pillars for a seat back brace today. I should have the seat back brace made and installed in a few days. I might be moving the seat again to try to get more head room then lowering the hoop to clear a hardtop. 

 

I really like the ZIIs. The wear on them is very even, no complaints about that. I'll stick with them.

Holy crap Johhny! 

 

My hoop is tall and I'm 2" under the broom handle from the main hoop to the dash. If my car does roll before full cage I should be fine, right? 

 

I have one event in two weeks and then I'm back in school and won't have time for these shenanigans for a while.
