I'm building a sm and have noticed that it seems to be the trend that the ecu/computer is relocated to the passenger floor/firewall.
Is there a reason for this? Can it we left in the original mounting point?

One of the rules in Spec Miata is that, if a rule doesn't say you can do something, then you can't do that thing.

There is no rule that specifies you are allowed to change the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) location of the ECU.
The 1990/1993 ECU is located in the passengers foot well on the sloped surface.
The 1994/1997 ECU is located on the passengers rear firewall.
