So I heard of the easy fix, if your mechanically inclinded...

You've got your head, with a plunge, etc.

Maybe this is more CA smog.

You find some kid with a Miata wanting to trick his ride out.

You show him your ride...and he agrees to swap.

Is he going to pass smog with my head ??

That's actually a clever way at "recycling" non-compliant heads...

There are plenty of kids out there who wouldn't mind the aggressive deburring for their street car!

But they will be disappointed by the cost/benefit ratio.
And eventually that head will end up in a salvage yard, mistaken for stock. We need a standard metal stamp to brand them permanantly.

Ignoring the possible gains from the plunge cut and STR work, is there any upside to these over a standard Miata head, besides a decade or two of less use?

Dumb trackday kid.

Mazda, if they produce some 1.6 and 1.8 heads, should run an exchange program.   Turn in your "illegal" head and get a "new" one at a killer price.   Two problems fixed at once!

I called Mazda and the 'racer' price for a new head, just the bare casting, no valves, springs, lifters, etc., is almost $800. My guess is a brand new complete head would cost around $1500 (again, the racer discount).

So, what will Mazda do with the old heads?

Engine builders that produced non compliant equipment should run this excange program, supplying free 2015 compliant equipment at their loss.

Their customers who were in the know, tough pucky.

The customers who were deceived, and the rest of the class that is subject to this rule changing cheating, and going to pay an unearned price, should be compensated.

Utterly despicable subterfuge by those in the know, and in the position to drive the class rules and direction.

How many podiums, points, wins, trophys, track records, etc. are held by Non SM cars?

Not to mention all the free tires these guys have stolen from the class.

sub·ter·fuge
ˈsÉ™btÉ™rËŒfyoÍžoj/
noun
noun: subterfuge; plural noun: subterfuges
  1. deceit used in order to achieve one's goal.
synonyms: trickery, intrigue, deviousness, deceit, deception, dishonesty, cheating, duplicity, guile, cunning, craftiness, chicanery, pretense, fraud, fraudulence

Johnny,

So you want to swap head with a street kid? Probably legal but not safe.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :) Good to see you driving at the nats.
